Why is my Global YO eSIM not working?

There are several common reasons your Global YO eSIM isn’t working, whether on Android or iPhone. Typically, Global YO allows you to download your eSIM before travelling, before activating it when you are ready to use it in your destination.

If this doesn’t work, it may be because your device does not support eSIMs, or because you need to change your data or APN settings. In this guide, we’ll look at how these issues can be addressed, to help you solve them.

How to fix a Global YO eSIM

Global Yo not working? It’s frustrating, but you might be able to sort the problem out with a few quick fixes.

Here are some common reasons your Global YO eSIM may not be working, and what you can do to get connected again.

Check if your device supports eSIMs

Nowadays, most phones and tablets are eSIM compatible, as long as they’re unlocked by the carrier.

You can check your device is eSIM compatible by going to settings, and then to mobile service. If you see a button to add eSIM, your device is compatible. Whilst the exact phrasing may vary slightly depending on the device, this can provide an easy way to eliminate your phone’s hardware as the problem.

Alternatively, you can use an online list of all eSIM compatible phones to see whether yours features.

Restart your phone after eSIM installation

Restarting your phone after installing the eSIM can refresh the device, which may resolve connectivity issues. This can be done by holding the power button for several seconds, until the option to power off appears on the screen. Select this option, and wait several minutes, before pressing and holding the power button again, to turn the device back on.

Turn on data roaming

If data roaming is turned off, your phone will not search for or connect to carriers outside your home country. This is designed to avoid charges when travelling overseas. However, if you have bought a data plan, you shouldn’t need to worry about unexpected data costs, so it’s safe to turn your roaming on when you arrive at your destination.

Double check your data roaming is turned on, even if it was turned on before you left, to rule this out as the cause of your issues.

Enable and disable Airplane Mode

Whilst you need to have airplane mode disabled for your phone to find a network provider, turning it on and off enables it to restart its search for networks in the area. This can be done through settings, and can resolve simple connectivity issues quickly.

Manually select a local network in settings

One reason your eSIM may not be working is if you are connected to a non-authorised network. By manually choosing your network, you can pick one which provides the best coverage and is authorised by your eSIM package.

First, go to settings on your device. If you have an Android, select Network and Internet, then Mobile Network. Then, continue to Network Operators or Network Selection, where you should be able to change from an automatic to a manual network selection.

If you have an iPhone, go to Cellular. If you have only one cellular plan, choose Network Selection. If you have multiple plans, choose the relevant line from the SIMs section, and then go to Network Selection. From here, turn off automatic, and select a network from those available.

Update or reset your APN settings

The Access Point Name (APN) acts as a gateway for your device to access the internet with a network provider. To check your device’s APN settings, open settings and click on Mobile Network or Cellular settings. Click on Access Point Names, or APN settings, and compare this with the carrier’s details.

These are generally found on their website, or through customer support. If they don’t match, update them to the correct APN information. You may need to restart your device to apply the new settings.
