Holafly Pricing Research

Key takeaways

This research shows that Holafly’s unlimited eSIMs are a better value for money in the USA, UAE, and Mexico for:

  • Moderate users (2 GB/day) for most locations and durations
  • Heavy users (3 GB/day) across almost all trip lengths
  • Travelers who prioritize peace of mind over upfront cost

The figures show that if you use 1 GB/day or less on data while traveling abroad, you could save on upfront costs with a limited data eSIM alternative. However, just 15 minutes on Instagram or 10 minutes using Uber can push you over this limit.

How to compare limited and unlimited eSIM prices

The eSIM market presents two fundamentally different models: unlimited data charged by the day (Holafly) versus fixed data allowances (most competitors).

When comparing these eSIM options, it’s important to understand how much data you will use during your trip. By estimating your data usage, you can choose the plan that will keep you connected without the need for an unexpected top-up.

Understanding how much Holafly costs versus capped alternatives requires examining real traveler data consumption.

Three traveler personas based on real data

We have created three traveler personas for this research:

  • Light user (1 GB/day): Email, messaging, occasional maps
  • Moderate user (2 GB/day): Social media, music streaming, regular photo uploads
  • Heavy user (3 GB/day): Video calls, HD streaming, frequent online access

So, let’s see how Holafly prices compare in five key destinations for the amount of data you use.

USA eSIM price comparison

Limited data eSIMs for the USA from providers like Airalo and Saily appear cost-effective at first glance. However, for travelers relying on 2 GB of mobile data per day or more, an unlimited eSIM provides the best value for money.

Having a comfortable allowance of data is particularly important in the US, as trips involve using data for GPS navigation on road trips, booking Ubers for travel within cities, and finding the way to your next landmark with Google Maps..

Mexico eSIM price comparison

Prepaid data packages from competitors appear wallet-friendly at first. But for travelers using 2 GB or more each day, unlimited data proves more economical in Mexico.

Mexico requires dependable data, booking Ubers in Mexico City, communicating in Spanish-only areas, reaching remote cenotes and ruins, and staying online at beach resorts with spotty WiFi all drain limited data allowances quickly.

Let’s see how Holafly’s eSIM for Mexico prices match up to competitors:

Best eSIM prices for Light users: Competitors like Airalo and Nomad deliver better value for travelers who can reliably stay under 1 GB per day. However, Holafly’s unlimited model provides peace of mind for those who want flexibility without monitoring usage.

Is Holafly worth it: Which eSIM offers the best value?

Holafly is worth it if you value peace of mind as you travel. With unlimited data and custom days, you can stream, share, and navigate without the worry of expensive top-ups.

For many locations and trip durations, Holafly’s unlimited eSIM price is even more affordable than low, limited-data competitor eSIM plans.

Holafly wins for:

  • Moderate users (2 GB/day) for most locations and durations
  • Heavy users (3 GB/day) across all trip lengths
  • Travelers who prioritize peace of mind over upfront cost

This said, the best value eSIM is always the one that fits the way you travel. If your plans include a digital detox, or you can rely on public WiFi for all your data needs, there are affordable options available.

Competitors win for:

  • Light users (1 GB/day) who stay within data limits
  • Travelers who prioritize the lowest upfront cost

Choosing between limited and unlimited eSIMs comes down to peace of mind. Fixed plans look cheaper upfront, but can cost more if you run out of data. Holafly’s unlimited plans mean you stay connected no matter how much data you use.

Holafly: Save on top-ups with unlimited data eSIMs

With no top-ups or hidden fees, Holafly’s unlimited data eSIMs give you peace of mind as you travel.

But unlimited data is just one of the features that set Holafly apart. When choosing Holafly, you also choose:

  • 24/7 customer support
  • Hotspot sharing (up to 1 GB)
  • Coverage in 200+ global destinations

Browse our Holafly shop for short-term travel eSIMs and peace of mind on your next trip. Or, for frequent travel, subscribe to Holafly Plans to stay covered in 160+ destinations under a single eSIM!

Bring your plans, not your worries. Holafly keeps you connected so you can enjoy the journey.

Methodology

Click to see how our analysis was carried out.

In this research, we compared the cheapest eSIM plans available for five market leaders, using three traveler personas to create comparisons between unlimited and limited data plans.

Here is a breakdown of the research methodology in greater detail:

  • Competitors: This research compares Holafly to four leading eSIM providers: Airalo, Saily, Nomad, and Ubigi.
  • Destinations: Our analysis covers three major tourist destinations in different global regions, helping to highlight the varying eSIM pricing structures from each provider.
  • Trip durations: We chose four popular trip durations (3, 7, 15, and 30 days) to create the best idea of how much an eSIM will cost for the average traveler in each destination.
  • Traveler personas: Our three personas (1 GB, 2 GB, and 3 GB daily data usage) were created in line with internal Holafly data gathered on typical data consumption when using a travel eSIM.

How we calculated costs

For Holafly’s unlimited eSIMs: We simply selected the number of days needed for each trip. For 30-day trips, we also showed the cost using Holafly Plans, our subscription service for frequent travelers.

For competitors with limited data plans: This required more complex calculations to find the cheapest way to get enough data. Here’s what we did:

  1. We identified which plans from each provider would give the required amount of data for each trip length
  2. We combined different eSIM plans and top-ups to find the lowest total cost
  3. We accounted for each provider’s specific rules:
    • Airalo, Saily, and Nomad let you add top-up data to your existing eSIM
    • Ubigi requires you to buy a completely new eSIM when you run out of data

This approach shows you the real cost of staying connected, including any mid-trip purchases you’d need to make if you run out of data.

Note: Holafly Plans and Saily Ultra were included in this research due to their cancel anytime policies. Other monthly eSIM plans that require more than one month subscription were not considered, as the total cost would be higher than the initial 30-day fee.
