India uses plug types C, D, and M at a standard voltage of 230V and 50Hz. Type D is the most common socket you’ll encounter. UK travellers will need a travel adapter, as Britain’s Type G plug is not compatible with Indian sockets.

In this guide, we cover everything you need to know about India’s plug types, voltage compatibility, and which adapter to pack. Stay connected with an unlimited data travel eSIM for the ultimate peace of mind on your trip.

What plug type does India use?

India’s plug system includes three types: C, D, and M, with D being the most common.

Type C plugs have two round pins, the same Europlug you’d find across much of Europe. Type D is the most commonly used socket in India, featuring three large round pins in a triangular layout. Type M looks similar to Type D but has larger pins and is typically used for heavier appliances rather than everyday devices.

What voltage and frequency does India use?

The standard voltage in India is 230V with a frequency of 50Hz. This local voltage matches the United Kingdom and most of Europe, so many appliances sold in those regions already work with Indian plugs.

Before you plug anything into an Indian plug socket, check the label on your device or power supply. If it says “INPUT: 100–240V”, your appliance is compatible and only needs a plug adapter.

Do you need a travel adapter for India?

Whether you need an adapter depends on where you are travelling from and the plug types your devices use.

  • From the UK or Ireland: Yes. Type G plugs from the UK and Ireland have three rectangular flat pins and do not fit Indian plugs.
  • From Europe: Yes. While Type C plugs are common across Europe and do fit some Indian sockets, Type D is the most widely used socket in India and won’t accept European plugs. A Type D adapter is the safest option.
  • From the US or Canada: Yes, North American power plugs use flat pins (Type A or B), which are not compatible with the India plug type system. You will need a travel adapter that supports the type D plug or type C connectors.
  • From Australia or New Zealand: Yes again. These plug types use angled flat pins (Type I) that will not fit plugs in India.

If you are unsure which plugs are used in India, choose a universal travel adapter that supports types C, D, and M for maximum compatibility.

Without the right plug adapter, you won’t be able to power your devices, which can be a major problem on your trip. So, whether you’ve arranged a pocket WiFi for India, a local India SIM card, or an eSIM to stay connected, it’s pointless unless your devices are charged.

Do you need a voltage converter for India?

Most travellers will not need a voltage converter. Modern electrical appliances such as smartphones, laptops, and tablets are dual-voltage and work with the 230V supply used in India.

However, some older appliances — especially hair dryers, curling irons, and straighteners from North and Central America — may be single-voltage. These devices require a converter to match the local voltage, or they may overheat and become damaged.

Instead of packing a heavy-duty voltage converter, many travellers prefer buying dual-voltage travel versions of heat-styling tools.

Where to buy India travel adapters

You have three options for buying an adapter for Indian plug types.

  1. Buy before you leave: The easiest option is buying an India plug adapter before your trip. You can find them online on Amazon, Argos, or Currys. Prices range from £10 to £30 GBP.
  2. Buy at the airport: You can also buy a travel adapter at the airport before departure or upon arrival in India. Shops in major airports such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore usually sell international plug kits. The downside is price. Airport adapters can cost two to three times more than buying online.
  3. Buy in India: You can find India plugs in local electronics stores, markets, hotel receptions, and tourist areas. While prices are very affordable (around £1-5), quality may vary, and some cheap adapters feel loosely wired and lack a proper earth connection.

Note: When purchasing any travel adapters, we strongly recommend using a reputable brand. When traveling to new countries, these devices are your lifeline, keeping everything you own charged.
