Travelling to Morocco soon? Don’t forget to pack the correct plug type to ensure your electronic appliances work abroad. Morocco uses plug types C and E with 220V voltage. This quick guide tells you everything you need to know about Morocco’s plug types, adapters, and voltage, so you can keep your devices charged and stay connected

What plug type does Morocco use?

Morocco uses two types of plugs: Type C and Type E plugs. You’ll need these to plug any electrical appliance into any electrical socket in Morocco.

Important: This won’t affect the voltage or frequency. If you suspect your appliance operates on a voltage/frequency higher or lower than 220V/50 Hz, you’ll need an adapter too.

Type C plugs have two round pins (also known as the Europlug) while Type E plugs have two round pins and a hole for the socket’s grounding pin. These plugs are very common in Morocco and overall Europe, so as a European traveller, you might not need an adapter.

Voltage and frequency in Morocco

The standard power supply voltage in Morocco is 220V/50Hz. This is the same standard used across most of Europe; if you’re travelling from here, you will probably be able to use your appliances without purchasing a voltage converter.

However, for travellers visiting from the United States or Canada, the standard voltage is 110-120V at 60Hz. If your device is designed to operate on 110-120V, plugging it into a 220V outlet in Morocco may damage it.

In this case, you’d need a voltage converter (also known as a transformer) in addition to a plug adapter.

Do you need a travel adapter for Morocco?

Whether you need an adapter depends on where you’re travelling from.

  • From the US or Canada: Yes. US plug types (Type A/B with flat pins) don’t fit Morocco’s outlets.
  • From the UK or Ireland: Yes. UK plug type G (three rectangular prongs) isn’t compatible with Morocco’s outlets.
  • From Australia or New Zealand: Yes. Australian plug types (Type I) don’t fit Moroccan sockets.

You’ll need a Type C or Type E adapter if you’re travelling from any of the above-mentioned destinations. Unless you’re coming from continental Europe, bring an adapter. Without one, you won’t be able to use your appliances, and more importantly, charge and use your phone in Morocco.

Whether you’ve arranged a local Morocco SIM card, pocket WiFi for Morocco, or a travel eSIM, it will all be pointless without the correct Morocco plug type.

Do you need a voltage converter for Morocco?

Most modern electronics, including smartphones, laptops, tablets, and cameras, are dual-voltage and typically rated for 110-240V. Before you travel, check your device’s label or power supply specs. This information will typically be on the charger itself.

If this is the case, you only need a plug adapter to fit Moroccan sockets and not a voltage converter.

Single-voltage devices (hair dryers, curling irons, straighteners, older US/Canadian electronics) are rated for only a specific voltage (usually 110V) and require a voltage converter.

Where to buy Morocco travel adapters

Here’s where you can buy Morocco travel adapters:

  • Buy online: The easiest and most affordable option is buying online from Amazon, Curry’s, or Argos. You can purchase Type C and Type E travel adapters separately or a universal travel adapter. These are ideal if you’re visiting multiple countries on the same trip. You can expect to pay around £8-25 GBP.
  • At the airport: Adapters are available at the airport’s electronic shops either before departure or upon arrival in Morocco. However, they won’t be as affordable as buying in advance, and prices can be 2-3 times higher.
  • In Morocco: You can also find adapters at electronic stores in cities like Marrakech, Casablanca, and Fes, and some hotels may sell or loan them. However, since availability isn’t guaranteed, it’s safer to bring your own.

If your trip includes multiple destinations with varying plug types, a universal travel adapter is the most practical choice.
