Verizon offers multiple options for international travel. Namely, a Travel Pass for short-term trips, an International Monthly Plan for longer trips or frequent travels, and a pay-as-you-go option for very occasional use. On top of that, there are cruise and in-flight passes to keep you connected while you travel.

Follow along to learn all about Verizon’s travel plans, including their pricing, coverage and features. If none of them feel right for you, we’ll also introduce Holafly’s international eSIM plans by the end.

Note: This article covers Verizon plans for US customers looking to travel abroad. If you’re looking for a local monthly plan in the US, check out our Verizon USA eSIM guide. If you’re a tourist visiting the US, check out our Verizon tourist eSIM article instead.

Verizon international plans

Let’s take a closer look at each international plan Verizon has to offer so that you can choose the one that suits you best. The same prices and features apply whether you need a Verizon international eSIM plan or one for a physical SIM.

Verizon Travel Pass

The Travel Pass is Verizon’s most popular option for short-term travel. It offers unlimited data, calls, and texts in 210+ destinations for a fixed daily fee.

  • Price: US$6/day in Canada and Mexico, $12/day in all other destinations.
  • Data allowance: Up to 5 GB of high-speed data daily, unlimited data at a reduced speed once the 5 GB limit is reached.
  • Call and text allowance: Unlimited

To activate your Travel Pass, text the word TRAVEL to 4004 or log into your Verizon account on the website or app and add it there.

Once activated, you’ll be charged the daily fee automatically whenever you make or receive a call, send a text, or use data abroad. If you don’t do any of these things, you won’t be charged. This means that you can keep the service active at all times and only be charged for it when you’re traveling.

International Monthly Plan

The International Monthly Plan is the recommended option if you plan to travel outside of North America for nine or more days in any given month. It provides coverage in 210+ destinations for $100/month per line, making it more affordable than the Travel Pass for longer trips.

  • Price: $100/month per line
  • Data allowance: Up to 20 GB of high-speed data monthly, unlimited data at a reduced speed once the 20 GB limit is reached.
  • Call and text allowance: 250 minutes of calls per month, unlimited texts.

You can add this plan to your account on the Verizon website or app. You’ll also be able to choose whether to add it as a one-time bundle or set up auto-renewal and stop the service when you no longer need it.

Cruise and In-Flight passes

With Cruise and In-Flight passes, you can continue using your Verizon phone plan on participating flights and cruises. Keep in mind that the passes don’t cover all flights and cruises, so make sure yours is covered before getting a pass.

  • Price: $20/day
  • Data allowance: Unlimited data at 3G speeds. 0.5 GB of high-speed data on cruises, no high-speed data on flights.
  • Call and text allowance: Unlimited minutes to the US and unlimited texts on cruises. Additional $1.99/minute and $0.50/text on flights.

To add a Cruise Pass, text CRUISE to 4004 or add it via the Trip Planner on your Verizon account. For an In-Flight Pass, you’ll receive a text from Verizon if you’re on a participating flight. Reply FLIGHT to that message to activate your pass.

Pay-as-you-go roaming

If you don’t activate a Travel Pass, Monthly Plan, or Cruise/In-Flight Pass, you’ll automatically be charged pay-as-you-go rates for Verizon international roaming whenever you use data, make or take calls, or send texts abroad. In most cases, this is the most expensive option, unless you only plan to send an odd text or make a short call while traveling.

  • Data roaming: $2.05 per MB used
  • Texts: $0.50 per message sent, $0.05 per message received.
  • Calls: From $0.99 to $2.99 per minute, depending on destination.

If you do go with this option, keep data roaming turned off whenever you’re not using mobile internet to avoid unexpected charges.
