Verizon international roaming: TravelPass and monthly plan costs
Verizon TravelPass charges by the day, and the International Monthly Plan suits longer trips. Compare both, and check whether your plan already includes it.
Verizon charges a daily rate to use your plan abroad, with a reduced rate for Canada and Mexico. For longer trips there’s a monthly international plan that works out lower from around nine days onward.
This guide covers every international option with current pricing, including the cruise and in-flight passes, and what starts a charged session.

What is Verizon international roaming?
Verizon international roaming allows you to use your Verizon phone number, data, calls, and text messages while traveling outside the United States. Working through partnerships with foreign carriers, Verizon’s roaming options are one way to stay connected as you travel, but theycan incur extra charges depending on your plan and destination.
Verizon’s international plans are available for Verizon customers in three distinct categories:
- TravelPass, including Verizon Cruise or In-Flight Passes
- Monthly International Plan
- Pay As You Go
What is Verizon TravelPass?
TravelPass is Verizon’s day-rate roaming service for travel outside the United States. It gives you unlimited talk, text and data in more than 210 countries and destinations for a set daily fee.
You get 5 GB of high-speed data per session, then unlimited data at 3G speeds for the rest of that session. Calls within the country you are visiting and back to the US are both included.
You are charged only on days you use your device abroad, and there is no charge while you are in the US.

Verizon roaming destinations
Verizon offers international roaming plans in over 210 countries and destinations. You can choose any four international plan options for each destination. However, Verizon doesn’t offer ALL options for every destination, like it happens with Verizon in Japan.
For example, the Monthly Plan isn’t available for destinations like American Samoa and the Aland Islands. The same applies to 5G internet speeds, which aren’t available for all destinations.
It’s crucial to double-check and ensure the destination you’re traveling to is included in your chosen plan and offers the required connection speeds.

The $100 International Monthly Plan includes 20 GB of high-speed data, then unlimited data at 3G speeds, plus unlimited texts and 250 minutes. You can take it for one month or let it renew.
The Cruise Daily Pass includes unlimited calls to the US, unlimited text, and 0.5 GB of high-speed data before dropping to 3G.
TravelPass or the Monthly International Plan?
Verizon positions the monthly plan for trips of nine days or longer, and the arithmetic matches.

The crossover sits at nine days. Below that, TravelPass costs less. Above it, the monthly plan does, and the gap widens on longer trips.
The monthly plan also gives you 20 GB at high speed rather than 5 GB, which matters if you are working while away.
Which Verizon plans include TravelPass?
This depends on your plan, and on one tier TravelPass is not available.
- TravelPass is added automatically on Unlimited Plus and Unlimited Welcome plans, so there is nothing to set up.
- On Unlimited Ultimate, TravelPass cannot be added, because that plan already includes international data, talk and text.
- On other plans, add it in My Verizon or by texting TRAVEL to 4004.
Do you need TravelPass in Canada or Mexico?
Often not. Unlimited data, talk and text in Canada and Mexico are included at no extra charge on all Verizon Unlimited plans and several others.
Check your plan features in My Verizon before adding anything. If Canada and Mexico are included, the $6 a day rate does not apply to you.
One limit to know about: if more than 50% of your talk, text or data across any 60-day period is in Canada or Mexico, Verizon may remove or limit service in those countries.
What starts a TravelPass session
A 24-hour session begins automatically the first time you use your device in a TravelPass country, whether that is a call, a text or data. Two hours in, Verizon texts to tell you when the session ends.
Background data counts. App content refreshing, email syncing and software updates can all start a session once cellular data or data roaming is switched on.
Wi-Fi calling is not included with TravelPass. Calls over Wi-Fi to anywhere other than the US are charged international long distance rates whether or not you have a travel plan.
Crossing borders. A layover in a third country on the way to your destination does not start a second session. Travelling between two countries with different daily rates, such as Mexico and Italy, does start a new session and a new fee.
Two numbers on one phone. If your device uses Dual SIM or a second number, each line is charged separately under whichever international plan applies to it.
Verizon pay-as-you-go roaming rates

Unlike TravelPass or Monthly International Plan, which have flat-rate charges, Pay As You Go’s international rates depend on your destination and whether you’re using talk, text, or data. This can get quite expensive as a traveler, and you might be better off using other alternatives like an eSIM for any destination.
How to add an international plan to Verizon
To add a TravelPass or Monthly International Plan to your account, follow the steps below or text “TRAVEL” to 4004.
1. Access your account on My Verizon Online or the My Verizon app.
2. Review the options selected for each line.
3. Select Change plan, Remove plan, View plan details and usage, or View your TravelPass days in the TravelPass bank.
To gather information about international plan options:
1. Select Add new plan.
2. Select Travel plan or Calling plan and follow the instructions to learn more about which international roaming options suit you.
Do you need to turn on data roaming for Verizon international plans?
Yes, data roaming must be enabled in your phone’s settings so that your phone can access roaming networks.
If this is not turned on, your phone cannot use mobile data abroad even if you’ve already added a TravelPass, Monthly International Plan, or an In-flight/Cruise Plan.
But don’t worry. Turning on data roaming doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be charged unexpectedly, given that you’ve activated a Verizon international plan.
If you haven’t activated a specific plan, you’ll be charged the rates in Verizon’s Pay As You Go.

How to keep your roaming costs down
Download maps and playlists before you fly. Offline maps and downloaded music remove the two heaviest everyday data uses.
Check whether your plan already covers your destination. Canada and Mexico are included on most Unlimited plans, and Unlimited Ultimate includes international data, talk and text.
Turn off background app refresh. Apps updating on their own can start a 24-hour session.
Use Wi-Fi calling only for calls to the US. Calls over Wi-Fi to other countries are charged international long distance regardless.
Compare trip length against the monthly plan. From nine days onward, the $100 plan works out lower than the daily rate.
