If you’re traveling from the US to Japan on a T-Mobile plan, you’re probably wondering whether you can use your phone as usual. Luckily, T-Mobile international roaming options offer several ways to stay connected in Japan.

This blog covers all you need to know about T-Mobile roaming in Japan, including plans, charges, roaming passes, and alternatives to staying connected abroad, such as unlimited data travel eSIMs from Holafly.

Does T-Mobile work in Japan?

T-Mobile offers international roaming services in over 200 destinations worldwide, including Japan (at an extra cost). Your T-Mobile eSIM or SIM card will connect to local Japanese networks, allowing you to continue using your phone to call, send texts, and browse the internet.

This said, your T-Mobile roaming options depend on your existing plan and whether you’re a pay-monthly or pay-as-you-go customer. Roaming charges vary accordingly as well.

T-Mobile Japan roaming charges

Generally speaking, you have three options for roaming with T-Mobile in Japan: getting a monthly plan with inclusive roaming, adding an international pass to your account, or settling for pay-as-you-go roaming rates for Japan.

Here’s a closer look at each option.

Pay-monthly plan with inclusive roaming

T-Mobile’s roaming-inclusive monthly plans are ideal for customers who travel to Japan (and 215+ other destinations) more frequently. Some international roaming-inclusive monthly plans are:

  • Experience Beyond and Go5G Next
  • Experience More
  • Go5G
  • Go5G Plus
  • Magenta
  • One and One Plus

Each plan includes unlimited high-speed data (with speed caps), unlimited texting, and low flat-rate calling at $0.25 per minute in Japan.

These plans are priced significantly higher than other basic T-Mobile plans without roaming and are targeted at those looking for a more complete solution from their home provider.

International Pass

T-Mobile also offers data roaming in Japan through its International Passes for 1-day, 10-day, and 30-day trips, but only for qualifying plans. You must be a primary account holder or authorized user.

  • 1-Day International Pass: $5 for unlimited calling and up to 512 MB of high-speed international data
  • 10-Day International Pass: $35 for unlimited calling and up to 5 GB of high-speed international data
  • 30-Day International Pass: $50 for unlimited calling and up to 15 GB of high-speed international data

You can also use your data for all three passes as a mobile hotspot

Pay-as-you-go roaming

If you’re not on a T-Mobile roaming-inclusive plan and refuse an International Pass, you’ll be subject to pay-as-you-go roaming rates for Japan

  • Calls: $0.25 per minute
  • Data: $0.01 per MB

This isn’t typically the best option for travelers, as pay-as-you-go roaming charges to use the internet in Japan can result in a lengthy bill, especially if you plan to use data-heavy apps like YouTube or Netflix

How to activate T-Mobile roaming in Japan

If you’re on one of T-Mobile’s roaming-inclusive monthly plans, you won’t have to activate anything. Once in Japan, ensure your data roaming is on, and you’ll be able to access all the included features.

To add and activate T-Mobile’s International Pass for Japan, head to the T-Mobile website or the T-Life app.

  1. Select Manage and tap See Plans
  2. Select Manage Add-Ons.
  3. Add the One-time Data Pass you want and tap Continue
  4. Tap Change date to choose when your pass starts.

If you don’t select a date, your pass will activate immediately.

To activate one-day or one-week international data passes on a prepaid plan, call T-Mobile customer service (1-877-746-0909) or access your T-Mobile account.

If you don’t activate any International Passes while mobile data roaming is turned on, you’ll be charged Japan’s pay-as-you-go roaming rates, as mentioned above.

Tip: Remember to turn data roaming on, or you won’t be able to connect to local networks.
