T-Mobile international roaming: Costs, plans, and alternatives

T-Mobile includes roaming on most postpaid plans. See what you get without a pass, what the International Passes cover, and how prepaid works differently.

T-Mobile includes international roaming on most of its postpaid plans. You get data and texting in 215+ destinations without adding anything, and buy a pass only if you want faster data.

What is T-Mobile international roaming?

T-Mobile international roaming connects your existing T-Mobile eSIM or SIM card to a local network when you cross a border, so you keep your own number and use your phone for calls, texts and data abroad.

It does not work on a day-pass model. On qualifying postpaid plans, data and texting in 215+ countries and destinations are part of the plan itself, so your phone connects when you land with nothing to buy. What you pay for is speed — the included data drops to reduced speeds once your high-speed allowance is gone, and an International Pass lifts it back up for a set number of days.

T-Mobile international roaming fees

On a qualifying postpaid plan, roaming costs nothing extra. Data and texting in 215+ destinations are included, and calls are $0.50 a minute.

Beyond that, the range is short: an International Pass runs $10 to $75, which works out at $2.50 to $10 a day depending on the length you pick. Prepaid sits outside all of it — a $5 Mexico and Canada bundle is the only add-on, and everywhere else is charged per country against your balance.

T-Mobile postpaid international roaming

International roaming is built into qualifying postpaid plans, and how much high-speed data you get depends on which one you are on.

What your plan already includes

In 215+ countries and destinations, postpaid plans include:

Experience Beyond and Go5G Next — up to 15 GB of high-speed data, then unlimited at up to 256 Kbps.
Experience More, Go5G Plus and Magenta MAX — up to 5 GB of high-speed data, then unlimited at up to 256 Kbps. These plans also get a separate 5 GB high-speed allowance in 11 European countries.
Essentials — unlimited texting only. There is no included roaming data, so a pass is the only way to get online. Pay-in-advance and No Credit Check plans are excluded from the benefit entirely.

All of them include unlimited texting and calls at $0.50 a minute, including over Wi-Fi, with no charge for Wi-Fi calls to the US, Mexico and Canada. That calling rate rose from $0.25 to $0.50 a minute on 25 June 2026, so guides written before then carry the older figure.

T-Mobile texts you at 80% of your high-speed allowance, and again when it runs out.

All three include unlimited calling in 215+ countries and destinations, which the included plan benefits do not.

The 30-day pass works out at a quarter the daily rate of the single-day one. Thirty separate 1-day passes would come to $300 against $75 for the 30-day.

How the passes work

Passes activate immediately unless you choose a future start date.
Buying a new pass ends any time or data left on the previous one, so it is worth letting one run out before adding another.
If the high-speed data runs out before the pass expires, texting stays unlimited and data continues at whatever speed your plan allows.
On plans without international data, that fallback is 128 Kbps for the duration of the pass.
Passes do not cover cruise ship networks.

T-Mobile prepaid international roaming

Prepaid works on a different basis, and this is worth checking before you travel.

International Passes require a qualifying postpaid plan. Prepaid customers cannot buy them, and the included roaming benefits on postpaid plans do not carry across.

What prepaid customers can add is a $5 Mexico and Canada bundle, covering:

Unlimited calling to and from the US, Mexico and Canada.
Unlimited texting to 215+ countries and destinations.
Up to 5 GB of high-speed data in Mexico or Canada, or your plan’s high-speed allowance if that is lower, then up to 128 Kbps.

Elsewhere, prepaid roaming is charged per country and deducted from your account balance. Some prepaid plans include up to 5 GB of high-speed data in selected Central European countries, with other destinations running at around 256 Kbps.

Per-country rates change, so check T-Mobile’s prepaid rate table for your destination before you fly.

T-Mobile international coverage

T-Mobile roaming reaches 215+ countries and destinations. It does not split them into numbered zones the way some carriers do. Coverage instead falls into three tiers:

The 215+ list. Your plan’s high-speed allowance applies, then data continues at up to 256 Kbps.
Mexico and Canada. Most current plans include them with full LTE data rather than the reduced speeds that apply elsewhere, so a trip across either border usually needs nothing extra.
11 European countries. On Experience More, Go5G Plus and Magenta MAX, these carry their own 5 GB high-speed allowance, separate from the 215+ one.

Within any of those, what you actually get depends on the local network T-Mobile partners with in that country. Two destinations on the same list can behave differently — one may give you LTE and the other 3G, and some have no partner at all. Check your specific destination on T-Mobile’s coverage page before you travel.

If you travel often, a T-Mobile international monthly plan builds roaming into what you pay each month, and there are international phone plans from other carriers that do the same. Either way you pay more every month.

How to activate international roaming with T-Mobile

The process of activating T-Mobile international data roaming depends on your roaming plan. For roaming-inclusive monthly plans, simply activate data roaming through your phone’s settings, and you’ll be able to use your phone just as you would at home.

If you want to use the T-Mobile international roaming pass, you’ll have to get the pass first. Here’s how you can do it:

Log in to your T-Mobile account on the website or through the T-Mobile app.
Go to the Manage Add-Ons section.
Select the plan you want to activate.
Tap Agree & Submit.
Activate data roaming through your phone settings.

If you do decide to go with pay-as-you-go rates, the process is identical to a roaming-inclusive plan and only requires you to activate T-Mobile data roaming on your phone.
