SMARTY offers roaming for all UK customers through inclusive plans, add-ons, and pay-as-you-go. If you’re travelling soon, it’s crucial to understand SMARTY’s roaming policies, charges, plans, and coverage to avoid extra charges.

Can you use SMARTY abroad?

Yes, SMARTY roaming works abroad, but how it works depends on where you travel and how you use your plan.

SMARTY roaming lets you use your mobile data, calls, and texts outside the UK by connecting to local mobile networks in your destination, also known as international roaming. You may face roaming charges, however, depending on your destination and existing plan.

SMARTY’s roaming countries are organized into two separate categories: EU countries and other destinations. The table below lists all SMARTY roaming zones, including EU countries in SMARTY’s roaming-inclusive zone.

SMARTY roaming plans

SMARTY keeps things relatively simple compared to other mobile networks, but roaming still works a few different ways depending on your destination.

EU roaming (included with plans)

If you’re traveling within the EU on a SMARTY plan, you’re entitled to:

Your call and text monthly allowance
Up to 12GB of data abroad (subject to SMARTY’s fair use limit)

Besides your EU roaming allowance, you can also purchase an EU Roaming Data Pass if you need more data. These passes give you access to your plan’s total data allowance for the time period you select, instead of being restricted to the 12 GB limit. There are currently two options:

1 day: £3
3 days: £7

Pay-as-you-go roaming (outside the EU)

If you’re traveling outside the EU, you’ll need an out-of-plan add-on for data, calls, and texts. Top up your out-of-plan balance, and pay as you go. Roaming rates depend on which band your destination falls into. The table below lists rates for all zones.

How to activate SMARTY international roaming

Even with data roaming enabled on your mobile device, your SMARTY SIM will not work abroad unless you complete these crucial steps.

First, check your destination and confirm whether it’s in a SMARTY EU roaming country or outside it.

Enable roaming in your phone settings: Go to Settings > Mobile Data > Data Roaming. Turn data roaming ON.

The next steps vary depending on whether you’re an iPhone, Android, or Windows phone user.

For iPhones:

Go to Settings.
Tap Mobile Service.
If you have more than one SIM or an eSIM, tap the plan you want to update (for example, your SMARTY SIM).
Tap Mobile Data Network.
Under both Mobile Data and MMS, enter the following: mob.asm.net
Once entered, go back to save your changes.
Restart your iPhone to make sure the settings take effect.

For Androids:

Go to Settings.
Tap More > Wireless & Networks or Connections > Mobile Network
Open Access Point Names – If you don’t have any access point you’ll need to create a new one.
Open 3 > Edit Access Point
Change the APN to: mob.asm.net

For Windows phones:

Go to Settings
Open Network & wireless > Mobile & SIM > SIM settings.
Click on Edit Internet APN.
Change the APN to: mob.asm.net
Click ‘save’.

You won’t have to reset the settings when you return to the UK, regardless of phone type.
