If you’re an EE user planning to head to Europe soon, it’s crucial to understand how EE’s EU roaming works. After Brexit, things changed regarding EE roaming in the EU. Gone are the days of blanket-free EU roaming with UK carriers. Instead, you’ll find various roaming charges, flexible roaming passes, and roaming add-ons in their place.

According to the EE international roaming policy, you can use your UK data allowance, make calls, and send texts in over 150 destinations. This said, EE does offer specific packages for EU destinations, while if you’re visiting a non-EU European country like Albania or Turkey, roaming charges will vary depending on the zone.

So, without further ado, let’s get into everything you need to know about EE EU roaming, including charges, plans, coverage, and alternatives like unlimited data travel eSIMs

Does EE have free roaming in Europe?

The short answer is no. EE roaming services no longer provide free roaming in Europe for most of its newer customers on pay-monthly or pay-as-you-go plans.

EE did offer free EU roaming before Brexit. Post-Brexit, EE introduced daily charges for EU roaming for new customers. Older customers and those who signed up before 7 July 2021 can still get free EU roaming if they are on EE’s pay-monthly plans.

However, if your plan started on or after 7 July 2021, you’ll have to use your minutes, texts, and data allowances in EE’s Europe Zone for a daily fee.

Only EE’s All-Rounder and Full Works plans include EU roaming without additional charges. The Full Works plan also includes worldwide roaming.

Here’s a table summarizing all of this information:

PlanFree EE roaming in the EU
Pay-monthly/pay-as-you-go (started before 7 July 2021)Yes
Pay-monthly/pay-as-you-go (started after 7 July 2021)No
All-Rounder Yes
Full Works Yes

EE includes all 27 EU countries within its EE Europe zone, where you can get free EU roaming (if you meet the requirements) or pay the EE EU roaming charges.

The EE Europe zone covers around 50 destinations in total, meaning you’ll receive similar roaming packages for select countries and states not included in the EU.

Here’s a breakdown of the EE Europe zone countries in full:

EE EU roaming plans and pricing

If you’re an EE customer on a contract after 7 July 2021, you’ll need to check which type EE EU roaming pass or package you can get with your home mobile plan..

Let’s examine each plan in depth to determine which might be best for your travel needs.

EU Travel Pass for pay-monthly customers

If you’re currently on a pay-monthly plan, you can qualify for an EE EU Travel Pass.

When you land in any of the countries included in EE’s Europe zone, you’ll receive a text from EE with a link to purchase your Travel Pass.

You’ll be able to call, text, and use your data allowances as you would in the UK for a daily fee of £2.59. Additionally, you could purchase a 7-day EU Travel Pass for £15.

If you use up any allowances, you’ll have no choice but to purchase EE’s roaming add-ons (500MB for £3).

EU roaming for pay-as-you-go customers

If you’re an EE pay-as-you-go customer, you’ll have to pay extra to make or receive calls, send texts, or use data in an EE Europe zone destination.

If you have an active EE Subscription Pack, you’ll receive an EE text when you arrive at your destination. This text will include options for roaming add-ons

  • Roam like Home for 24 hours: £2.50 a day
  • Roam like Home for 7 days: £10 for 7 days

Let’s say you don’t want to choose either of these options, or don’t have an active subscription. You’ll be subject to EE’s standard pay-per-use roaming rates

  • 70p per voice minute
  • 30p per text message
  • £3 for 500 MB (you’ll need to buy a data add-on for this)

Non-EU EE Europe roaming rates

If you’re traveling to Europe and the country falls outside of EE’s Europe Zone, here’s what you’ll be charged:

How to avoid EE roaming charges in Europe

EE’s Europe zone travel passes help you avoid high pay-as-you-go EE roaming charges. However, all options for EE roaming in Europe take data directly from your monthly allowance, meaning you’ll have to monitor your data usage as you travel.

To avoid the stress of checking your remaining data, or having to top-up while in a foreign country, it’s worth considering an unlimited data travel eSIM.

Whether a regional package for all of Europe or a single destination eSIM, you can choose a plan that suits your needs, buy and activate it online, and keep covered for your entire trip – no matter how much data you need.

Also, if you’re looking for a more long-term solution to staying connected in Europe, consider a monthly subscription. Services like Holafly Connect offer unlimited data ($64.90/~£48), 25 GB ($44.90/~£35), and 10 GB ($34.90/~£26) packages on a monthly basis – the perfect solution for remote workers, frequent travellers, and digital nomads.

Choose Holafly for unlimited data in Europe

While EE offers a variety of roaming options for Europe, travelling on existing data allowances can be stressful. If you’re looking to stay connected without worrying about add-ons, top-ups, or extra charges, look no further than Holafly.

Holafly eSIM plans offer unlimited data, a quick and easy setup process, 24/7 customer support, and the flexibility of matching your plan to your vacation. This means you can browse the internet stress-free and pay for the exact duration of your trip, and no more.
