1. A plane ticket to Peru and back to Spain

Migration authorities require a return ticket when entering Peru. This is relevant for tourists because a return ticket or reservation guarantees the completion of the tourist’s time in the country. Additionally, some airlines may require a return ticket as a condition to board the flight to Peru. Therefore, we recommend purchasing a round-trip ticket or at least a reservation showing your departure from Peru within the allowed time-frame.

2. Visa to travel to Peru from Spain

Travel for tourism

If you want to travel to Peru to enjoy its sights and cuisine as a tourist, Spanish citizens don’t need a tourist visa for stays up to 183 days. This period isn’t extendible, and exceeding it results in fines and penalties. According to the National Superintendence of Migration, it’s 0.1% (S 4.95 / $1.30) of the Tax Unit (UIT) for each additional day. You could even be expelled from the country without the possibility of entry for five to 15 years.

Study trip

For those wishing to reside in Peru for studies, a student residence visa is required. It grants 365 days of extendible residence for longer programs or 90 days for internships or courses. This must be requested at the nearest Peruvian consulate in Spain.

Digital nomad visa

Peru doesn’t offer a specific visa for digital nomads. If your stay will be less than 183 days, you can enter as a tourist. For longer stays, it’s advisable to consult with the Peruvian consulate about other temporary residence options.

Work visa

If your trip to Peru is for work or collaboration with a Peruvian company, you must obtain a work visa before entering the country. You’ll need a copy of the employment contract approved by the Peruvian Ministry of Labour, among other documents. This procedure must be carried out at the Peruvian consulate in Spain.

3. Spanish passport

This document proving your identity and nationality is required by the Peruvian immigration authorities to allow your entry. Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months when you enter Peru. Otherwise, the immigration authorities will refuse entry and you’ll be returned to Spain.

4. Andean Migration Card (TAM)

Since 2023, Peru and other South American countries have implemented the Andean Migration Card (TAM) as a migration and statistical control document. It records personal information, entry/exit dates, and authorized stay duration.

Apart from the passport, which will no longer be stamped for international flights arriving in Peru, you must complete the TAM form virtually with no margin for error before travelling. Upon entering the country, your entry will be electronically registered, and you’ll be asked for the TAM as part of immigration control. You can access it through the official website or the Migraciones del Perú app.

5. Address of your accommodation in Peru

If you intend to stay in Peru for an extended period with a work or study visa, immigration authorities will require you to provide a permanent accommodation address when applying for the visa and confirm it upon arrival in the country.

For tourists, the Peruvian government doesn’t require a confirmed accommodation address as a mandatory entry requirement. However, it’s common for tourists to have a confirmed reservation to speed up the arrival process.

6. Medical insurance to travel to Peru

If you’re going to live or work, taking out medical insurance for Peru is part of the requirements for obtaining the corresponding visa and travelling from Spain. We aren’t talking about travel insurance, but a medical policy that covers your long-term health needs and provides access to quality healthcare, as Spanish Social Security services aren’t valid abroad.

7. Pre-registration

The National Superintendency of Migration of Peru implemented a pre-registration system to streamline immigration control at the new Jorge Chávez Airport terminal. It’s recommended that passengers pre-register within 48 hours prior to their flight. This process can be completed on the website or on the Migration app.

Once completed, a confirmation number will be sent, facilitating the immigration process through electronic gates that verify data biometrically. This measure is aimed at reducing contact and waiting time at the airport

Note: Please note that if you’re travelling with children, the disembarkation process must be done in the traditional way.

8. Pass Peruvian immigration control

When you arrive at Jorge Chávez International Airport from Spain, you’ll have to go through Peruvian immigration control. To ensure everything goes smoothly, have the requirements we explained earlier on hand when disembarking for the airport exit process.

  1. Disembarkation: When you get off the plane, follow the signs to the immigration control area.
  2. Immigration control: If you’ve completed the pre-registration, you can use the electronic gates (e-gates) at the airport, which verify your identity biometrically and speed up the entry process. If you haven’t completed the pre-registration or are traveling with children, you’ll need to go through the personalized assistance modules.
  3. Baggage reclaim: Once you complete immigration control, head to the baggage claim area to collect your belongings.
  4. Customs: If you have items to declare, proceed to the appropriate customs control.
