Verizon roaming pricing in Japan

Let’s discuss how much Verizon roaming in Japan costs and what it includes.

International Monthly Plan

With the Verizon International Monthly Plan, which costs $100/month, you get access to the following benefits:

  • Unlimited data – Offers 20 GB of high-speed data, then lowers to unlimited 3G
  • Unlimited texts
  • 250 minutes – Charges $0.25/minute if you run out of minutes.

You can add this plan by going to the My Verizon international page and selecting “Add new plan,” or text TRAVEL to 4004 to add it to your account.

Note: Unlimited Plus and Unlimited Welcome Plans include the International Monthly Plan as an add-on at no extra cost.

TravelPass

If a International Monthly Pass is too much for your trip, you can rely on the Verizon Japan TravelPass

This roaming pass gives unlimited data, text, and phone calls for $12/day, and resets every 24 hours after activation.

To activate a Verizon Japan TravelPass, text TRAVEL to 4004 or add it using the Trip Planner tool on the Verizon website.

With a TravelPass, you’ll be limited to 5GB of high-speed data per session when using Verizon roaming in Japan. After that, you get unlimited data at 3G speeds.

Note: If you’re calling a different country other than the US or the one you’re visiting, you’re charged with local rates. If you need to call internationally, pick an International Calling plan to avoid pay-per-minute rates.

Pay As You Go

If you don’t use the International Monthly Plan or the TravelPass, you’ll have to pay pay-as-you-go rates to use Verizon in Japan.

Here are the rates for Verizon Japan roaming:

  • Talk: $2.99/minute
  • Text: Sent $0.50, received $0.05
  • MMS: $0.25 sent and received
  • Data: $2.05/MB

Pay-as-you-go service is available as soon as you turn on your phone’s “Data roaming” option.

How to reduce Verizon Japan roaming charges?

Verizon offers plenty of roaming options in Japan, making it easier for US travelers to stay connected abroad. However, the roaming bill can increase, primarily when relying on pay-as-you-go rates.

But you can reduce roaming charges with the following tips:

  • Rely on the TravelPass: Paying $100/month for roaming can easily increase your travel budget, especially if you’re out for just a few days. However, a TravelPass is a good option for shorter trips.
  • Monitor your data usage: The International Monthly Plan and TravelPass offer a limited amount of high-speed data; keep an eye on it, especially if you’re working as a digital nomad in Japan. If you spend these, you’ll need to use pay-as-you-go rates to access high-speed data.
  • Rely on a travel eSIM: If you consider Verizon roaming Japan not a fit for your trip, you can rely on a travel eSIM instead. With an eSIM, you can get unlimited data, tethering, and high-speed data for a portion of the price.
