What is the Optus roaming country zone for Malaysia?

Malaysia is an eligible country in Optus Roaming Zone 1, offering Optus international roaming. So, when you land in Malaysia, you can use your SIM without having to purchase a Malaysian SIM card

In Malaysia, Optus roaming usually connects automatically to one of the major Malaysian networks, such as Maxis, CelcomDigi, or U Mobile, depending on coverage in your area.

Optus postpaid roaming pass for Malaysia

Two roaming options are available for Optus postpaid customers: $5 and $10 daily passes.

Optus $5 Roaming Pass for Malaysia

Optus $5 roaming pass is a daily plan that includes 5 GB of data and unlimited talk and text for $5 per day. It is only available on specific Optus plans, including Optus Choice Plus, Optus Plus Family, Optus Plus Promo, Optus Choice Plus Data, Optus Plus Kids, Business Choice Plus, Business Choice Data Plus, Business Teams Plus, and Qantas plans.

How it works:

  • Price: $5 per 24 hours (charged only on days used).
  • Data: 5 GB per day.
  • Call and SMS: Unlimited.

This plan activates automatically when you start using roaming in Malaysia, and only charges for the days you use roaming. So, if you use Optus roaming in Malaysia for one week, $40 will be added to your bill.

Optus $10 Roaming Pass for Malaysia

If you are on older postpaid plans like Non-Choice Plus plans, you will be eligible for the Optus $10 roaming pass, which includes 1 GB of data, unlimited talk, and unlimited text

How it works:

  • Price: $10 per 24 hours.
  • Data: 1 GB.
  • Call and SMS: Unlimited.

The $10 roaming pass also charges for the days you use roaming in Malaysia. If you use up your 1 GB of data within a single day, an extra 1 GB will be automatically added for an additional $10.

Optus roaming Malaysia pay-as-you-go charges

If you don’t activate your daily plans or forget to purchase a roaming pack, you will be charged at standard roaming rates, which can get very expensive, especially if you are a frequent data user.

Postpaid standard roaming rates

Postpaid customers should activate their daily plans before their trip. Otherwise, the pay-as-you-go rates will apply, which include:

  • Talk: $1.50 per minute of making or receiving talk.
  • SMS: $0.50 per text.
  • Data: $1.00 per MB.

Note: Just a few minutes of using Google Maps and scrolling Instagram during a day can easily use around 100 MB of data, which could cost about $100. So, if you are not eligible to use Optus roaming passes, purchasing a travel eSIM can be a more affordable option.

Prepaid standard roaming rates

If you don’t purchase roaming packs, the standard PAYG rates can drain your credits very quickly.

It includes:

  • Talk: $1.00 per minute.
  • SMS: $0.50 per text.
  • Data: $0.50 per MB.

Note: At $0.50 per MB, even small activities, like downloading a few photos or automatic app updates, could easily use 100 MB of data, which can cost around $50 in one day. Always purchase a roaming pack to avoid roaming charges during your trip.
