O2 roaming in the USA: Plans, packages, and pricing
Let’s talk about how each roaming plan works, including pricing, benefits, and how to activate each option.
O2 Travel Inclusive Zone Bolt On and Travel Inclusive Zone Ultimate
The O2 Travel Inclusive Zone and Travel Inclusive Zone Ultimate are available for users with Volt and Plus Plans and offer roaming in the USA at no extra cost.
Here’s how each one works:
- Travel Inclusive Zone Bolt On: Available in 27 destinations outside Europe, including the USA, and gives unlimited texts, minutes, and data.
- Travel Inclusive Zone Ultimate: Available in 75 destinations, including the United States, and offers the same benefits as the Travel Inclusive Zone Bolt On.
Both plans have a speed data cap when using O2 roaming in the USA of 2Mbps.
Before traveling, double-check that you can use O2 data roaming in the USA. Simply log in to your My O2 account and check that the roaming option is activated.
If it isn’t available, text 23336 with TRAVEL to activate the service, or you can do it through My O2.
O2 Travel for Pay Monthly
For those with a non-eligible O2 Travel Inclusive Zone Bolt On and Travel Inclusive Zone Ultimate plan, there’s the O2 Travel Bolt On.
This option lets you stay connected with unlimited texts, data, and minutes for £7 when visiting 63 destinations, including the USA.
Before travelling, check your My O2 account to see if the data roaming service is activated. If not, activate it manually on your account or text TRAVEL to 23336 to activate the service.
If the service is not activated, you’ll pay the standard pay monthly plans’ O2 roaming charges.
Here’s how much each one costs:
- Making calls: £3/minute
- Receiving calls: £3/minute
- Sending texts: £1/minute
Mobile data is sold as roaming bundles. You’ll get a link as soon as you land in the USA, or you can buy any of the following bundles using My O2 before departing:
- 1GB: £6
- 3GB: £13
- 5GB: £18
O2 Travel for Pay As You Go
If you’re not using monthly or travel zone roaming services, you’ll pay standard Pay As You Go O2 roaming charges in the USA.
Here’s how much each service costs:
- Making calls: £2/minute
- Receiving calls: £2/minute
- Sending texts: £0.50/minute
- Data: £7.20/MB
How can O2 roaming charges in the USA be reduced?
O2 has many roaming options for staying connected when travelling to the USA. However, the most convenient plans, like the Travel Inclusive, might not be suitable for every O2 user.
Here’s how you can save some money when roaming with O2:
- Set a “Spend Cap” limit on your account: If you’re using Pay Monthly or Pay As You Go plans, setting a “Spend Cap” on your My O2 account will avoid any surprise fees.
- Pay for the data bundles you’ll use: Not using Instagram or other heavy data usage apps on the go? Choose the cheaper data bundle. It’ll give you less data, but you’ll save some extra money, too.
- Avoid Pay As You Go: This option can rapidly increase your roaming bill, and you might not get the data needed for your trip. Use it as your last connectivity option if you’re on a basic O2 plan.
- Use a travel eSIM: If you don’t want to purchase the most expensive O2 plan, and Pay As You Go is not your ideal roaming plan, using a travel eSIM can help you reduce roaming charges.
Holafly eSIM for USA: Say goodbye to roaming charges
The USA roaming O2 service is complete, with some plans offering unlimited data at no extra cost. However, these are pricier than standard plans, making O2 users rely on data roaming bundles.
That’s where an eSIM, such as the Holafly eSIM for the USA, turns into an accessible roaming solution. For £6/day, you get unlimited data, up to 1 GB of data sharing, 5G connectivity when available, and 24/7 customer support.
However, depending on how long you’re travelling, your eSIM can be cheaper. For a 7-day trip, you’ll pay £24 or £3.43/day, which is lower than using the £7 O2 roaming service.
And, if you’re a demanding user or a digital nomad, using Holafly Plans is another ideal solution. For ~£47.76/month, you get unlimited data, tethering, 24/7 customer support, and 5G speeds, plus connectivity in over 170 destinations.
