Bell Roam Better for Europe

Bell’s Roam Better package is available for customers on monthly Bell Mobility plans. It’s not available for prepaid Bell customers or corporate accounts.

For $16/day you can use data from your existing Bell plan. However, there is a speed cap of 512 Kbps after 5 GB of daily data usage.

As well as access to your data, the Roam Better add-on also provides:

  • Unlimited outgoing calling within your roaming destination and back to Canada
  • Unlimited incoming calls
  • Unlimited outgoing and incoming text messages

You can add this plan via your MyBell customer area on the Bell website or by texting ROAM to 8000.

Bell Europe 14-day Travel Pass

Bell’s Europe 14-day Travel Pass is also only available to Bell Mobility plan holders.

For $70, you get access to your home data allowance for two weeks in any eligible European destination.

The pass also includes:

  • Unlimited outgoing calling within your roaming destination and back to Canada
  • Unlimited incoming calls
  • Unlimited outgoing and incoming text messages

You can add this plan via MyBell customer area on the Bell website, or by texting EURO14 to 4400.

Bell pay-per-use roaming in Europe

Anyone with a postpaid Bell plan who doesn’t have a Roam Better add-on or Europe Travel Pass is subject to pay-per-use roaming rates.

If you’re a prepaid Bell customer, you will not be able to access Bell’s roaming services at all.

Costs vary by zone, so it’s worth checking which zone your European travel destination belongs to:

  • Zone 1: Calls are $2.50 per minute, outgoing texts are $0.99 per message, and data is $8.00 per MB.
  • Zone 2: Calls are $3.50 per minute, outgoing texts are $0.99 per message, and data is $12.00 per MB.

Pay-per-use roaming is automatic. It applies when you use your phone for calls, texts, or data in an eligible European destination without an active roaming plan.

How to avoid Bell roaming charges in Europe

While Bell’s roaming options provide convenience, there are ways to reduce or avoid Bell roaming fees, so you can use mobile internet in Europe without the high prices:

  • Check your destination’s available passes: Choose the right roaming add-on for your trip’s duration and destination to save on roaming costs. For example, 14 days of Roam Better costs $225, compared to the $70 Europe 14-day Travel Pass.
  • Monitor your data usage: Turn data usage notifications on to avoid an automatic switch to pay-per-use rates. Bell sends you a text once you’ve reached 80% and 100% of your data pass. You can also track usage via the Bell app.
  • Turn off data roaming: If you’re not using your phone on the go, and can rely on public WiFi in Europe, it’s best to turn data roaming off in your settings. This way, you won’t accidentally use data roaming in Europe, which could trigger a Better Roam pass or even pay-per-use rates.
  • Use WiFi when possible: Use free WiFi in hotels, cafes, and public areas for internet access, calling, and messaging. The more you use free WiFi networks, the easier it is to avoid roaming charges
  • Consider a local SIM card: Due to EU legislation, a SIM card for Europe will usually give you data across the entire region at a much cheaper price than data roaming. However, this isn’t always the case. Check your local SIM card’s specs before making a purchase.
  • Purchase a travel eSIM: An eSIM works like a SIM card, but without the hassle. Simply install your chosen eSIM plan online before you travel, activate it in your settings once you land (or even on your flight), and you’ll have internet access wherever you travel in Europe for much cheaper than Bell’s roaming costs.
