As an AT&T customer, you’ll be able to use your phone in Canada. To do so, you’ll need to consider AT&T’s international roaming solutions. This blog covers all you need to know about AT&T Canada roaming for US customers, including coverage, prices, and passes

If you’re looking for an alternative to staying online on your trip to Canada that saves you more money, an unlimited data travel eSIM from Holafly is worth considering.

Does AT&T work in Canada?

Yes, AT&T works in Canada by providing monthly plans with inclusive Canada roaming, roaming add-ons and passes, and pay-per-use options.

With these roaming options, you can use your AT&T eSIM/SIM and your existing plan’s allowances just as you would at home in the United States. AT&T roaming in Canada is possible through partnerships with local cell networks such as Bell, Rogers, and Telus, ensuring a strong local connection.

Is AT&T free in Canada?

Whether AT&T international roaming in Canada is free or not depends on your plan. For customers not on AT&T’s unlimited monthly plans, roaming in Canada is not free. If that’s the case, you’ll have to either purchase AT&T’s roaming add-ons or pay the standard pay-per-use roaming rates

Keep reading to learn more about your various roaming options, and when Canada is included in your AT&T plan.

AT&T Canada’s roaming charges

There are generally three ways to call, text, and use cellular data in Canada on an AT&T mobile plan. Each option is suited to various trips: extended, frequent, and short vacations.

Monthly plans with inclusive roaming

If you frequently travel to Canada, opting for one of AT&T’s roaming-inclusive monthly plans is worthwhile. While such plans will cost more every month, you won’t have to pay additional roaming charges every time you visit.

Here are five AT&T plans that include data roaming, calls, and texts in Canada (and the United States and Mexico):

AT&T planPriceDataCallText
Unlimited Premium PL$50.99Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited
Unlimited Extra EL$40.99Unlimited (speed cap at 75 GB)Unlimited Unlimited
Unlimited Starter SL$35.99Unlimited (slow data speeds likely)Unlimited Unlimited
Value Plus VL$50.99Unlimited Unlimited Unlimited
4GB $50 (1 line)4 GB per lineUnlimited Unlimited

Roaming pass

If you’re not on a roaming-inclusive monthly plan, you can use AT&T’s roaming pass options instead.

Roaming in North America

This roaming feature for Canada or Mexico is included with select plans; however, customers on other plans may also be able to add the Roam North America feature. This includes unlimited talk and text, and access to your existing plan’s data allowances in Canada.

To check if you’re eligible to add this feature to your plan, head to AT&T’s website or:

  1. Log into your myAT&T account on the app
  2. Go to “My Plan” to see your current plan details.
  3. See if your plan is eligible for the Roam North America feature or if you can upgrade to an unlimited plan.

AT&T International Day Pass

You can opt for an International Day Pass if you’re not on any eligible monthly plans with inclusive international roaming or roaming features.

With this pass, you can use unlimited talk and text plus access to your regular mobile data allowance while you’re in Canada for $12 per day.

Pay-per-use

If you’re not on an AT&T unlimited monthly plan and haven’t added a roaming feature or day pass to your plan, you’ll be subject to pay-per-use international roaming rates for Canada

  • Call: $1 per minute
  • Text: $0.50 per text
  • Data: $2.05 per MB

While this option is feasible for short one-day trips, you can rack up quite a hefty bill if you’re not careful. With only one MB costing $2.05, simply watching a 10-15 minute YouTube video would result in $300+ charges. Using other data-heavy apps, like YouTube, would result in an even larger bill. It’s best to avoid this roaming option whenever you can.

How to activate AT&T in Canada

Firstly, make sure data roaming is turned on in your phone’s settings. This will connect you to local Canadian networks and allow you to use your phone normally. If this isn’t turned on, you won’t be able to use any of your plan’s features.

You won’t have to activate anything if:

  • You’re on an eligible monthly plan with inclusive roaming
  • You have AT&T’s International Day Pass, which will activate for 24 hours automatically as soon as you call, text, or use mobile data in Canada.

If you don’t wish to activate this pass, keep your mobile device’s data roaming off until ready.

On the other hand, if you wish to use AT&T’s pay-per-use roaming services, log on to your AT&T account on the website or app and turn off the international day pass service to prevent automatic activation.
