April is when the dark and lifeless winter finally gives way to spring, with flora and fauna coming to life all throughout Europe. That said, while the temperatures may be getting warmer, it’s not exactly hot in April in most European destinations. But what if you get away for a week in the sun? Follow along for the warmest holiday destinations in Europe in April.

Where is hot in Europe in April

The Canary Islands

  • Average daily high temperatures: 22°C (72°F)

While the Canary Islands are officially a part of Spain, they are actually located much closer to Africa than Europe. In fact, it’s further south than Marrakech, Cairo, and all of Tunisia. This means that the weather here is typically much hotter than anywhere in mainland Europe, and it’s one of the very few European destinations suitable for a beach holiday in April.

When not at the beach, you can explore the cozy towns scattered around the islands, with architecture ranging from colonial to contemporary and even some indigenous Guanche settlements.

The average temperature in the islands for April lingers around 22°C (72°F). However, if you visit towards the end of the month, it’s often a couple of degrees warmer. The water temperatures at this time are around 19°C (66°F), which can be a little too cold for some but is generally good for a refreshing swim.

Cyprus

  • Average daily high temperatures: 22°C (72°F)

Cyprus is yet another island located in the very South of Europe, making it a safe pick for generally good weather in April. Cities like Paphos, Ayia Napa, and Larnaca are known for their beaches. However, many restaurants or activities, especially in Ayia Napa, can still be closed since the summer crowds have yet to gather.

If there’s a cold breeze blowing in one of the coastal towns, plan a trip to Nicosia, which is often a few degrees warmer. The island is fairly small, so you can get from one end to the other in a few hours, whether by driving or taking a bus

The center of Nicosia marks the place where Cyprus is split in half, with the Republic of Cyprus to the South and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus to the North.

While the actual divide is highly debated amongst locals, it allows you to experience two completely different cultures without leaving the city. Just make sure to have your ID card or passport with you, or you won’t be let through to the Northern side.

Algarve, Portugal

  • Average daily high temperatures: 21°C (70°F)

The Algarve region is the southernmost part of Portugal and a very popular tourist destination, best known for the towns of Lagos and Faro. The average daytime temperatures in April typically reach 21°C (70°F), with the second half of the month being slightly warmer and offering better beach weather.

That said, there are plenty of other things you can do here, even when the weather isn’t quite hot enough for the beach. Explore the natural beauty of the surrounding areas by taking on a hike, trying fresh seafood straight from the Atlantic, or discovering cozy little towns scattered throughout the region.

Kemer, Turkey

  • Average daily high temperatures: 21°C (70°F)

You probably get the trend by now — the further south you go, the more likely you are to get good weather in April in Europe. And Southern Turkey fits the bill perfectly. Kemer is just one of the top tourist destinations here, with Antalya, Alanya, Bodrum, and Mardin all being cities worth a visit while in Turkey.

As with all European destinations, perfect beach days are rare during this time. The water is yet to warm up, and you can only expect days to reach 23°C (73°F) or more towards the end of the month.

That said, April is the perfect time to enjoy spring blooms, go on breathtaking hikes, or explore ancient ruins. Göbekli Tepe, or Potbelly Hill, is the most famous ancient ruin in the region. Located in Southeastern Anatolia, the ruins date back to around 9000 BCE, the pre-pottery Neolithic times.

Early April is also when the Orange Blossom Festival, a celebration of the orange blossom season, takes place in Adana. The festival includes a parade, shows, dances, and performances, showcasing rich cultural traditions and the connection to nature.

Crete, Greece

  • Average daily high temperatures: 20°C (68°F)

Crete is perfect for anyone seeking sunny weather combined with a cultural experience. Located just south of mainland Greece, the island is known for its strong links to Greek mythology, charming cobblestone streets, turquoise waters, and stunning beaches.

You’re likely to find some mild temperatures, so don’t forget a light jacket or sweater when packing your bags for Greece. The weather does warm up towards the end of the month and is often good for sunbathing, but the Mediterranean Sea is still a bit cold for most, with water temperatures around 17°C (63°F).

That said, it’s still a great place to enjoy warm weather on sun-drenched shores or explore the island in peace before the summer crowds arrive.

Sicily, Italy

  • Average daily high temperatures: 20°C (68°F)

Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean, located just south of mainland Italy. As with all destinations on this list, expect milder weather at the start of the month, with daily highs occasionally reaching up to 25°C (77°F) as it gets closer to May.

A trip to Italy in April is always a good time for visiting local markets and simply exploring Sicily while avoiding peak summer crowds. It’s a perfect time for hiking, and there are plenty of hikes to go on within the island. The water may still be too cold for long swims, but you’ll definitely find a good time to catch a tan at the beach.
