AT&T international plans allow you to keep using your phone abroad without having to buy local SIM cards or additional devices. Different options are available, depending on how often you travel, how much data, talk, or text you need, and where you’re traveling to.

Let’s take a closer look at the international plans offered by AT&T. If none of these options right fit for you, we’ll also introduce Holafly — an international eSIM with coverage in 200+ destinations.

Note: This article focuses on international plans for current AT&T customers. If you want to get a new AT&T plan, check out our blog on AT&T eSIM plans in the USA. If you’re a tourist visiting the US, learn about AT&T’s plans for tourists.

AT&T international phone plans

AT&T’s international coverage options include roaming-inclusive monthly plans, an International Day Pass, and pay-per-use rates

Roaming-inclusive plans

If you travel frequently, you can get an AT&T international eSIM or physical SIM plan that includes international data, calls, and texts in the monthly price. That said, there are no global AT&T international roaming options available with the monthly plans.

All AT&T plans include talk, text, and data in Canada and Mexico at no extra cost, with some plans offering unlimited usage. On top of that, the AT&T Unlimited Premium plan covers 20 Latin American destinations, with unlimited calls, texts, and high-speed data in all covered countries.

If your travel destination isn’t covered by either of these plans, your best option is to get an International Day Pass instead.

International Day Pass

AT&T’s International Day Pass provides coverage in 210+ destinations, 400+ cruise ships, and even participating airlines for a fixed daily fee.

Regular passes cost $12/day to use your regular allowance of phone calls, texts, and cellular data. This means that if you have an unlimited plan at home, you’ll be able to enjoy unlimited international calling, data, and text messages with the International Day Pass.

The same $12/day fee applies to eligible flights, though data speeds and allowances may be reduced on flights. A Cruise Pass costs $20/day for unlimited talk, text, and 500 MB of high-speed data. Once you use up your high-speed data allowance, speeds may be reduced to 512kbps on certain ships.

How to get an AT&T International Day Pass

You can add the pass via the AT&T website, app, or by texting TRAVEL to 222. The price for the pass is charged automatically whenever you make or receive calls, use data, or send texts abroad. You won’t be charged for any days when you don’t use your phone.

Pay-per-use rates

In general, pay-per-use rates are the most expensive way to use your phone when traveling abroad. If you don’t add an International Day Pass to your plan and travel to a country not covered by your plan, you’ll be charged separately for each call, text, and MB of data you use.

  • Calls: $1/minute in Canada and Mexico, $2/minute in Europe, $3/minute in the rest of the world, cruises, and airlines.
  • Texts: $0.50/message, $1.30/picture or video sent.
  • Data roaming: $2.05/MB on land and cruise ships, $10.24/MB on airlines.

It’s best to turn data roaming off if you don’t have an active Day Pass to avoid unexpected roaming charges. Just a few minutes on social media will likely cost more than a Day Pass would, so don’t use pay-per-use roaming unless you don’t plan to use your phone at all.

Prepaid Travel Add-On

If you’re on a prepaid AT&T domestic plan, you can buy a Travel Add-On to use your phone abroad. For $35, you get unlimited talk, text, and up to 5 GB of data in select destinations throughout the world (check AT&T’s website for the full country list).

To activate your add-on, simply reply to the text message that you’ll receive from AT&T on arrival at your destination.

International Calling Add-Ons

If you have a prepaid plan and want to make calls from the US to other countries, you can buy calling add-ons to do so. There are two options to choose from:

  • International: For $10/month, get 250 minutes of calls from the US to 70 countries.
  • International Plus: For $15/month, get unlimited calls from the US to 85 countries and discounted rates to 140 countries.

Avoid roaming fees with Holafly eSIM plans

If you’re looking for international data, Holafly offers a more affordable way to stay connected worldwide. All you need is an active plan and an eSIM-compatible phone. Choose from short-term travel eSIMs or get a pay-monthly plan for long-term coverage.

Travel eSIMs cost from $1.55 to $7.90/day for unlimited data, with prices differing depending on your destination and the duration of your stay. That said, even the most expensive plans are cheaper than AT&T’s Day Pass. On top of unlimited data, all plans include 24/7 customer support and data sharing.

Holafly Plans offers a pay-monthly eSIM subscription with unlimited data for $64.90/month or a 25 GB plan for $49.90/month. Both plans offer coverage in 170+ destinations with a single eSIM, ensuring that you’re able to stay connected almost anywhere you go. When no longer needed, simply cancel the plan at no extra cost.
