In 2026, Apple began its shift towards eSIM-only technology, removing the physical SIM tray from the iPhone 17 in several countries and making the iPhone 17 Air eSIM-only worldwide.

So, is the iPhone 17e eSIM-only too?

Yes, but not everywhere.

  • In the USA, Canada, Mexico, Japan, and various countries in the Middle East, the iPhone 17e is eSIM-only.
  • In China, the iPhone 17e has a dual nano SIM+eSIM
  • In all other countries, the iPhone 17e has a nano SIM+eSIM

While the iPhone 16e was eSIM-only in just the USA, Apple’s eSIM-only technology has expanded to 12 regions for the release of the iPhone 17e. This makes it one of the best eSIM-compatible phones for travel.

How much does the iPhone 17e cost?

As the economical option in the iPhone 17 series, the iPhone 17e sits at a mid-range price point. According to Apple’s official press release, the launch price of the iPhone 17e is:

  • $599* for the 256 GB model
  • $799* for the 512 GB model

*These are US-based prices, and costs may vary across retailers, carriers, and regions.

This makes the iPhone 17e cheaper than all other models in the range. For example, the iPhone 17 starts at $799, the iPhone 17 Pro starts at $1,099, and the iPhone 17 Pro Max starts at $1,199.

It also makes it a more affordable option than the Galaxy S26 eSIM-compatible phone that is launching around the same time as the iPhone 17e.

iPhone 17e key features

The iPhone 17e is turning heads of tech fans because it’s equipped with many of the same features as the rest of the 17 series, despite its lower price tag. It also has many new or enhanced features of prior “e” models.

Powerful performance

The iPhone 17e is powered by Apple’s A19 chip, a significant step up from the iPhone 16e’s A18 chip.

It also has a 6‑core CPU, 4‑core GPU, and a 16‑core Neural Engine, making it strong enough for multitasking, creative apps, and even console‑level gaming. So while it may be a mid-range model, it is designed for more than everyday tasks.

Advanced camera system

The iPhone 17e features a 48 MP Fusion camera on the back with a 2x optical‑quality telephoto mode, allowing you to zoom closer without losing detail.

While the 16e also had this system, the 17e builds on it with advanced Portrait modes that intelligently isolate subjects like people or pets.

MagSafe fast charging

For the first time in the “e” line, the iPhone 17e supports MagSafe wireless charging (up to 15 W). Reaching up to 50% in about 30 minutes, the 17e has significantly faster charging speeds than past mid‑tier models.

Improved durability

The iPhone 17e’s 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display features Ceramic Shield 2, like the rest of the 17 series. This not only reduces glare, but it’s tougher than any smartphone glass and gives 3x better scratch resistance than the 16e.

Satellite features

The iPhone 17e also includes Apple’s groundbreaking safety features, such as Emergency SOS, Roadside Assistance, and Find My via satellite. This makes the 17e an ideal option for travelers and hikers who don’t want to forkout on Apple’s higher‑end devices.

Both the Samsung Galaxy S26 and the Google Pixel 10a eSIM-compatible smartphones are set to be released at the same time as the iPhone 17e. Here’s how they compare in terms of price, performance, and features:

  • Performance: Galaxy S26’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is the most powerful processor, followed by iPhone 17e’s A19 chip, and then Pixel 10a’s mid‑range Google Tensor G4 chip.
  • Display & Design: Galaxy S26 boasts the brightest and most advanced display overall, while the iPhone 17e’s Super Retina XDR OLED screen provides rich colours and excellent contrast.
  • Camera Systems: The Galaxy S26’s camera setup surpasses the 17e and Pixel 10a in versatility and zoom capabilities.
  • Battery & Charging: The Pixel 10a offers the longest battery life, though the iPhone 17e and Galaxy S26 support fast charging.
  • eSIM & Connectivity: All three support eSIM technology along with a physical SIM (although the iPhone 17e is eSIM-only in some regions). This makes them all equally travel-friendly.
  • Price: The Pixel 10a is the cheapest, followed by the iPhone 17e and then the Galaxy S26.
