AT&T international eSIM: How to use AT&T outside of the US
There is no dedicated AT&T eSIM for international travel, but you can use roaming to stay connected as you travel. Discover your options and alternatives.
If you’re planning on going abroad, it’s time to start thinking about what data plans will work for you on your travels. A good place to start is with your home cell provider. AT&T is a popular provider within the US, but what can it offer when you travel abroad?
While there is no dedicated AT&T international eSIM for travel, the company offers a range of options for your travel needs. We outline the pricing and features of these travel plans, as well as comparing them to international eSIM providers like Holafly.

Does AT&T sell travel eSIMs for international travel?
There is no dedicated AT&T eSIM for international travel like those you can get from a specialist provider like Holafly.
Instead, you’ll need to use one of the AT&T international roaming solutions with your regular SIM or eSIM plan. This means that you must be an existing AT&T customer to use their services abroad, as there is no AT&T international eSIM available for general sale.
What are the data roaming options available to you with AT&T? Let’s find out below.
How to use your AT&T eSIM outside of the US
You have three options to use your AT&T eSIM for international travel; roaming inclusive home plans, international day passes, and pay-per-use roaming.
By activating one of these options, you can turn your home eSIM into an AT&T international eSIM for the duration of your trip.
AT&T roaming-inclusive home plans
There’s a chance your AT&T contract already includes international roaming. If your plan includes roaming in North America, you should be able to continue using your data in Mexico and Canada just as you would at home. If your plan doesn’t include this, you can get it from $33 USD a month for 8 GB data.
There is also the AT&T Unlimited Premium plan, which covers 20+ Latin American destinations but costs $10-15/month more per line than other Unlimited plans.
AT&T International Day Pass
The AT&T International Day Pass allows you to continue using your regular eSIM package abroad for $12 per day, with an extra $6 for every additional line. If you’re on a cruise ship, the plan is available for $20 per day, offering up to 500 MB of data daily.
These flexible plans have a daily rate and are only activated the first time you use your phone each day, meaning that you only pay for the days you use.
You can also sign up for the International Day Pass before you leave, so your coverage can start as soon as you arrive at your destination, allowing you to use your AT&T eSIM internationally.

AT&T pay-per-use
If you have an AT&T eSIM card but opt not to get a roaming-inclusive plan or a day pass, you will be able to keep using your cell phone outside of the US with pay-per-use roaming.
Calling rates range from $1 to $3 per minute, depending on where you are. Text messages are $0.50 each, and internet access costs $2.05/MB, unless you’re on a flight, in which case it will be $10.24/MB.
These charges can stack up fairly quickly, so it may be worth considering what your data needs will be, and buying an alternative plan before you leave. When you’re deciding which plan will work best for you, consider using our data usage calculator to find out how much data you are likely to need.
AT&T International Day Pass vs. dedicated travel eSIMs
If your plan doesn’t include international roaming, the cheapest way to use your AT&T eSIM for international travel is to buy an International Day Pass. But how does this compare to a dedicated travel eSIM from international providers?
The AT&T International Day Pass lets you use your regular data allowance with your current eSIM in 210+ destinations for just $12/day. It’s an easy option for AT&T customers, but the flat rate means you will pay more for some destinations than with alternative providers. As a result, an eSIM may be a cheaper option than the AT&T international plan, depending on where you are going.
Meanwhile, dedicated travel eSIMs come in more varieties. Available for all to buy, some offer unlimited data, and prices are flexible depending on the destination. You will need to install and activate your eSIM on a different line, so you must make sure your phone is unlocked by your cell phone carrier before travel.
Here’s a breakdown of both:
AT&T International Day Pass | Dedicated travel eSIMs | |
---|---|---|
Data allowance | Allows you to use your domestic plan internationally, whilst on land, or up to 500MB per day on a cruise ship | Choose the amount of data you require depending on your anticipated usage, with some providers offering unlimited data |
Price | $12 per day on land, or $20 on cruise ships | $1.55 to $6.90 per day with Holafly |
Coverage | Coverage across much of the world – use AT&T’s coverage map to check out your destination | Depends on the plan you choose: pick between individual country or regional plans |
