What began as a revival of Western aesthetics, thanks to TV hits like Yellowstone and fashion’s renewed love for fringe and cowboy boots—has led to a cultural shift that’s reshaping how we travel. Cowboy-core has galloped into the mainstream, and it doesn’t appear to be slowing down.

The season 5 finale of Yellowstone drew a record-breaking 13.1 million viewers in its first three days, making it the most-watched episode in the show’s history. This surge in popularity reflects a growing fascination with cowboy culture that extends well beyond the screen.

Travel data from platforms Tripaneer and Skyscanner, also reveal some impressive numbers: interest in horse trail riding has soared by 94%, while demand for U.S. ranch stays has jumped 42% over the past year. Bookings for holidays featuring horseback riding are also up 18%. Meanwhile, Western-inspired fashion and rural travel aesthetics are trending across TikTok and Pinterest, where hashtags like #cowboycore and similar themes continue to explode in popularity.

Why dude ranches are the ultimate escape

Travelers today crave more than just scenic landscapes; they want a genuine connection to the heritage of the American West – a return to the freedom and rugged spirit that helped shape America’s identity. From early morning horseback rides to sunset BBQs, travelers are seeking out authentic dude ranch stays, which offer a slower kind of escape.

Originating in the late 19th century, dude ranches were created to preserve cowboy culture. And today they offer exactly that—a living, breathing experience of frontier life. These ranches combine rural traditions, storytelling, and heartfelt hospitality to create unforgettable journeys.

That said, it doesn’t mean you’ll be herding cattle (unless you want to, of course!) Modern ranches offer a wide range of comforts like spa services, yoga, and gourmet dining—so you can soak up the cowboy spirit without even saddling up.

Top 5 recommendations for your cowboy experience

1. Dress the part: Comfort meets style

Start with the essentials – wear sturdy, broken-in boots and durable jeans to protect your feet and legs from rough terrain and brush. A wide-brimmed cowboy hat is essential for shielding your face and neck from the sun, while a bandana helps keep dust and wind at bay. Dressing the part isn’t just practical – it helps you fully embrace the ranch lifestyle. Plus, you’ll look great in photos that capture your adventure. Being properly dressed sets you up for a safe and enjoyable experience.

2. Protect yourself: Hydrate and use sunscreen

Don’t underestimate the Western sun – it can be intense and can quickly cause sunburn, even on cool or cloudy days. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 before heading outside and reapply it every couple of hours, especially if you’re sweating or outdoors for long periods. Keep a refillable water bottle close and sip regularly to prevent dehydration. Staying hydrated and sun-smart ensures you can enjoy every ride, hike, and cookout without discomfort

3. Capture and share your ranch experience: Stay connected with a travel eSIM

Every trail ride, sunset, and campfire moment on the ranch is a travel memory worth sharing. Staying connected is essential to fully capture these experiences.

A travel eSIM keeps you connected worldwide, even in remote areas, so you don’t have to worry about losing signal or paying extra for roaming. Unlike local plans tied to one carrier, it connects to the strongest network available local or international. You can easily browse, upload photos, and share stories in real time, keeping your memories fresh and the moment alive. And if you’re on your phone all day, an unlimited data plan like eSIM USA means you won’t suddenly run out of data just when your trip is getting started.

4. Respect the land and traditions

Dude ranches are a living piece of history, often passed down through generations, making the land and traditions precious. Always stick to marked trails and avoid disturbing plants or animals. Follow ranch rules regarding campfires, waste, and water usage to minimize your impact. Show respect for local customs and etiquette. Honoring these practices helps preserve the ranch’s unique spirit and ensures it remains a welcoming place for future visitors.

5. Ask questions and be curious

One of the greatest parts of a dude ranch stay is the people, wranglers and staff who know the land and lifestyle intimately. Don’t hesitate to ask about horses, wildlife, or ranch traditions. Their stories and insights deepen your connection and make your experience truly unforgettable. Showing curiosity makes you part of the ranch family, turning your trip into a genuine adventure.

So… where will you saddle up next?

Methodology

A total of 90 dude ranches across the U.S. and Canada were collected from the official ranch directory of the Dude Ranchers’ Association (DRA). Each dude ranch was then added to the index where the following metrics were collected:

  • Location
  • Tripadvisor rating
  • Distance to nearest regional airport
  • Distance to nearest international airport
  • Total # of activities listed
  • Total # of riding options available
  • Total # of special events listed
  • Total # of dining options
  • Total # of lodging and amenities
  • Average cost of stay, per person, per night (based on July date where possible)

Each metric was normalized on a scale of 1-100. Each ranch received a final index score which is the average of the individual metric scores. Higher scores indicate a more well-rounded, better guest experience. For the purpose of this piece, only ranches in the U.S. were included in the results.
