MolaViajar is now a popular Spanish-language travel blog, inspiring thousands of people every day to see the world. In this interview, we chat with Adri, one of its founders, about how the travel blog began, the challenges they’ve overcome, and their advice for anyone dreaming of a life on the road.

How did the idea of starting a travel blog like MolaViajar come about?

MolaViajar started back in 2008 when we set off to travel the world. At the time, staying connected wasn’t as easy as it is today—there was no WhatsApp, and social media wasn’t as big as it is now. So, to keep our family updated and give them peace of mind, we decided to start a blog. We even took a course in Barcelona, but it was just a hobby—we never imagined it would turn into a career. Little by little, though, it grew, and here we are today.

Regarding the name of the blog, how did you settle on it?

A fun fact that not everyone knows is how we came up with the name MolaViajar. It actually happened during a conversation with a French coworker. I mentioned that I needed to choose a name for our blog as part of the course we were taking, and he just said, “Mola viajar.” (Spanish for “traveling is cool”). I thought, “Hey, that sounds great!” The only catch? Our main audience is made up of Spanish speakers, and we realized that the word “mola” (cool) isn’t really used in Latin America compared to Spain, which made things a bit tricky—but we stuck with it!

What has been the biggest challenge in turning your passion into a job?

Since everything happened gradually, we never really saw it as something we could make a living from at first. Because of that, we didn’t face any major challenges in the beginning. It was only later that we started to realize MolaViajar might actually turn into a full-time career.

One of the biggest challenges was actually getting companies to take us seriously. Back then—16 or 17 years ago—the whole influencer scene didn’t really exist. We’d reach out to brands, trying to convince them that we could give them visibility, but most of them weren’t interested. It was a struggle to keep pushing forward with so little support.

We have to say, the first company that really believed in us was IATI. And years later, when Holafly came along, they also saw the value in what we were doing and have been supporting us ever since.

Speaking of challenges: traveling as a family must be quite the adventure. What is it like with Dani and Oli?

At first, it was definitely a challenge. When Daniela was born, we weren’t yet living off the blog, but we wanted to show people that having kids doesn’t mean you can’t travel. You can still explore the world with them. So, we focused on sharing that message and started creating lots of content around family travel with young children. That’s when things really started to take off!

It’s true that traveling with kids is different from when we used to travel as a couple. We’re not as spontaneous anymore. Traveling with children requires much more planning.

Although we still travel as a family, we’ve reduced the amount of content featuring the kids. About two or three years ago, we decided to stop showing them on MolaViajar so much. Instead, we started focusing more on travel content that’s useful for all kinds of travelers, rather than just family-oriented posts. This shift helped protect their privacy and allowed the channel to be more about the travel experience and us as travelers.

How do you choose the destinations you travel to?

While we always make sure we like the destination, we typically choose places for two main reasons: first, because they’re good for the blog, and second, because they’re ideal for traveling with family and friends. We don’t focus as much on the second type of trip on the blog, since those are more about leisure than work.

In the first category, the ones that are great for the blog, we feature destinations like New York, London, and the U.S. West Coast. These places have gotten a lot of attention and, on top of that, we genuinely love them.

The second type of trips are with family or friends, like Egypt, Peru, or Colombia. These trips are all about having fun! While we’ve shared some content about them on social media, we don’t cover them on the blog the same way we do with the other destinations.

If you had to choose only one destination, which would it be and why?

If we had to choose one destination, it would definitely be New York. It’s the place that made everything possible for us. It’s where we gained recognition, grew, and were able to make a living from this. We’ve even published five editions of our New York travel guide. It’s an amazing city, and that’s why it means so much to us.

You have created many travel guides, what have you learned in the process?

When creating guides, you quickly realize you don’t know a destination as well as you thought. Writing a blog post or sharing things on social media is one thing, but writing a book about a place is something else entirely. There are so many details—hidden spots, neighborhoods, and corners you wouldn’t normally pay attention to during a typical trip. But when you’re working on a guide, you have to explore all of those in much more depth.

In addition to all of that, we’ve gained a lot of knowledge in other areas as well—logistics, printing, design, photography, marketing, sales… pretty much everything. We’ve also had to learn about various distribution platforms, like Amazon. Now things are much more organized, including storage and packaging. There’s a whole world behind the guides that people don’t see. Ultimately, we’ve built our own publishing company and had to learn everything from scratch.

How is the relationship with your followers?

We try to have a different kind of connection with our audience compared to other YouTubers or bloggers. We really enjoy answering questions about trip planning, and we do it for free, whether it’s through email or WhatsApp. Even though it takes time, we make sure to reply to every single message. I think that’s a big part of what makes MolaViajar special and why people feel so attached to us. We also like to occasionally organize meetups and events to interact with our followers. It’s definitely something that brings us closer to them.

Many people dream of making a living from traveling, what would you say to those who want to follow in your footsteps?

While it’s definitely possible, it’s also very difficult. On social media, people often only see the exciting side of it. The truth is, you probably end up spending more time working at your computer than actually enjoying the destination. Sure, if you approach it the right way, it can be an incredible job because it gives you freedom that a traditional job can’t. But that doesn’t mean it’s not a lot of hard work, much of which never gets shown. We like to be upfront about that and share it with our followers.

Have you had any experiences that could serve as a “what not to do” lesson?

During a long trip to the U.S., before Holafly eSIMs existed, I went to a T-Mobile store to get a one-month plan. However, they mistakenly signed me up for a contract that renewed automatically without explaining it to me. The experience was terrible, and if I returned to the U.S. now, I wouldn’t be able to sign a contract with them. It was a complete waste of time, both then and dealing with the issues afterward.

Staying connected while traveling is essential these days. How has your experience with Holafly been?

Honestly, our relationship with Holafly has been great from the start. We reached out to them because we were working with other companies that weren’t providing good service. We were looking for a reliable company we could trust—and we found it!

Having internet on your phone is essential these days for so many reasons. For me, it’s mainly about being able to move around with peace of mind. With internet at your fingertips, you can enjoy your trip without wasting time and know that if something goes wrong—whether you get lost, need to deal with a stolen card (which happened to us in South Africa recently), call an Uber, or file an insurance claim—the phone has you covered. For us, staying connected while traveling is really important. Plus, as content creators, we need to stay on top of social media and other updates.

One moment when having internet was crucial for us was during our trip to Colombia. We were in South America, driving a rental car through unfamiliar places, and having Holafly internet on our phones made it so much easier to get around, almost like we were locals. It also allowed us to stay in touch with our family 24/7.

Can you share some additional travel tips to help our readers plan their next adventure with MolaViajar?

Of course! Here are some of our travel tips with things we think are important to check or do:

  • Check the official website for each destination to find out what paperwork is required to enter the country. A very useful page for this is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union, and Cooperation website. You can find valuable information about all the member countries there.
  • If you’re going to rent a car at your destination, make sure you need an international driver’s license.
  • Always travel with travel insurance, as unforeseen events can happen to anyone.
  • Never travel to a destination and use your phone without knowing what roaming fees your phone provider will charge. It can lead to a nasty surprise, and it’s just not worth it when you have options like Holafly.
  • It’s important to research your destination ahead of time so you at least have an idea of where to start. Arriving somewhere without a plan can waste a lot of time. At MolaViajar, we have guides for several destinations that can be really helpful—they’re practical and full of useful information.
  • When booking accommodation, always check recent reviews and consider how long the place has been operating. We recently fell into the trap of booking non-existent rooms. It was a total scam!
  • Make a checklist of the most important things to pack. Be sure to focus on key documents like travel permits, invitation letters, passports, as well as your bank cards and eSIM. These will help you avoid any surprises along the way.
