From street food to fine dining, food is no longer just something we enjoy on vacation; it’s becoming the reason why we go on vacation.
From street food stalls to Michelin-starred restaurants, what we eat is increasingly shaping how we explore and connect with a destination. Today, travelers are seeking diverse, immersive, and memorable experiences, with food playing a major part in that.
Rather than focusing on a signature dish or particular cuisine, many cities now stand out for the variety of food on offer. Local traditional food sits alongside global influences, creating food scenes where travelers can experience multiple cultures within a single trip. Cities like London and New York are great examples. In London, in particular, global influences have shaped one of the world’s most diverse dining scenes, where traditional pubs, Indian curry houses, and Middle Eastern eateries can all be found in one street, reflecting the city’s multicultural population.
This growing demand for variety is reshaping travel priorities. A recent global survey conducted by Skyscanner found that food was the most important factor for Gen Z when picking a holiday destination (61%). Supporting these findings, TravelBook discovered that travelers are planning entire trips around cultural passions, with nearly 80% prioritizing food experiences as a top travel motivator.
But with so much on offer, which cities offer the most diverse food experiences?

Methodology
To identify the world’s most diverse food cities, we took a seed list of destinations from the ‘World’s Best Cities’ rankings. We then used Tripadvisor to analyse the variety of different cuisines within each city (based on the most popular cuisine types available). The share of local versus international cuisine was calculated to measure culinary diversity, alongside additional metrics such as the number of Michelin-starred restaurants, and the availability of vegetarian- and gluten-free-friendly dining options. Each metric was compared across cities to produce the final ranking.
