Where to go in California for your first visit

For a first trip, combine San Francisco with Carmel-by-the-Sea, then add Yosemite National Park if you have five days or more.

  • Three days: San Francisco. Point Reyes National Seashore is about 30 miles north, so it fits as a day from the city. That park is covered below.
  • Five days: Add a night in Carmel-by-the-Sea, and a night at Yosemite. The valley is about a 4-hour drive, so it’s not a day trip.
  • A full week: Add Los Angeles or San Diego as a second base. Joshua Tree National Park is about 140 miles from Los Angeles, so pair it with that city.
  • Swaps, not extras: Mendocino is the quieter North Coast town. Santa Barbara is the warmer coast town. Details are in the sections below.

Best beach towns to visit in California

Carmel-by-the-Sea, Mendocino, and Santa Barbara are the best beach towns: a walkable village, a quieter North Coast stop, and a warmer town that works better from Los Angeles.

Carmel-by-the-Sea

Carmel-by-the-Sea is the coast town to add to a San Francisco trip. It is small enough to walk, and the beach sits at the end of Ocean Avenue. Give it a night rather than a same-day turnaround.

  • Best time to visit: April to June and September to October. November through April is quieter, especially midweek.
  • Best for: Couples, and travelers with a dog who want a village and a beach. Dogs may be off leash on Carmel Beach if they respond to voice command. Downtown is a leashed walk, and the town has no street lights at night.
  • Practical tip: Park once and walk. Wood fires are banned on the beach. Visit midweek in the slower season if you want the village quieter.

Mendocino

Mendocino is the quieter North Coast town, north of San Francisco on Highway 1. The village sits on a headland, and Mendocino Headlands State Park wraps around it. It is a walk, not a theme-park day.

  • Best time to visit: March to May and September to October. Spring is the whale-watching window. Summer fog is common.
  • Best for: Couples and families who prefer a small main street. Dogs are allowed in the Headlands, which is unusual for a California state park. The trails have steep drops, so this suits older kids better than a stroller.
  • Practical tip: The Headlands are day use only. Highway 1 is the only road in, so check it the morning you drive. A storm closure means the day is off.

Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara is the warmer coast town and a much easier add from Los Angeles. It is a second base, not a day from the north.

  • Best time to visit: March to May and September to November. Winter is mild enough for the wharf. Summer is the busy beach season.
  • Best for: Couples and families who want a walkable coastal city. Dogs are not allowed on city beaches. They are allowed on Stearns Wharf on a short leash. Do not leave a dog in the car.
  • Practical tip: Wharf parking is free for the first 90 minutes, then $3 an hour.

Best national parks and natural attractions in California

Yosemite National Park is the Sierra day, Point Reyes National Seashore is the coastal park close to San Francisco, and Joshua Tree National Park is the desert park to pair with Los Angeles.

Yosemite Valley is famous for its dramatic U-shaped natural architecture and is viewed by over 4 million visitors a year.

Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park is the first Sierra stop. Yosemite Valley is 195 miles east of San Francisco, about four hours, so it needs an overnight stay. The valley holds the waterfalls, the meadows, and the short paved paths. The high country is a separate drive.

  • Best time to visit: May to June and September. Waterfalls are strongest in late spring. Summer weekends fill the valley. Tioga Road and Glacier Point Road close in winter once snow arrives, so check the conditions page the morning you go.
  • Best for: Families and couples who want the valley, not a backcountry hike. A dog can use paved paths, including Lower Yosemite Fall and the Cook’s Meadow boardwalk, on a leash no longer than 6 feet. Most trails, meadows, and the shuttle buses ban pets.
  • Practical tip: Parking in the valley fills on summer weekends, and El Capitan Bridge has weekday delays of about 15 minutes through December.

Point Reyes National Seashore

Point Reyes National Seashore is the coastal park you can go to from San Francisco on Highway 1. Bear Valley is an easy start. The beaches and the lighthouse road are for longer day trips.

  • Best time to visit: April to June and September to October. January through March is elephant seal season, and part of the beach south of the lifeboat station closes to people and pets.
  • Best for: Couples and families who want a coastal walk without a long drive. A dog can come only on listed beaches, including North Beach and part of Limantour, and only on a leash no longer than 6 feet. Most trails are closed to pets. This is not the park for a long dog hike.
  • Practical tip: Beach sections close for nesting and seals. Check the conditions page before you pick a trail. Pets are not allowed in buildings or on park shuttles. The Bear Valley Visitor Center is the place to confirm what is open that day.

Joshua Tree National Park

Joshua Tree National Park is a desert park. The visit is the short loops, the rocks, and the night sky. There is no food, gas, or water inside the park.

  • Best time to visit: October to April. Spring and fall days are usually in the 70s and 80s. Summer highs are often around 100°F. Winter nights can drop below freezing.
  • Best for: Couples and older kids who can handle a dry park with no services. Pets are not allowed on trails.
  • Practical tip: You do not need an entrance reservation. Buy the pass ahead on Recreation.gov, because the booth is sometimes closed and you may pay on the way out. Do not follow GPS onto dirt roads. Cell service is limited.

Best cities to visit in California

San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego are the best city picks.

San Francisco

San Francisco is the first-trip base. Key areas are the waterfront, neighborhoods, and Alcatraz. Point Reyes and Carmel-by-the-Sea, both covered above, are the add-on days. Yosemite is an overnight trip, not a day trip from the city.

  • Best time to visit: September to November, when the fog eases. Winter still works. Alcatraz and the museums are indoors, and the ferry runs except on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
  • Best for: Couples and families who want a walkable city. Children can do Alcatraz. A dog cannot. Pets are banned because it is a nesting site, however, service animals are allowed.
  • Practical tip: Alcatraz City Cruises is the only ferry, from Pier 33. Book before you travel. Summer dates go first. A day visit takes about two to three hours. The island is open daily except Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Los Angeles

Los Angeles is the second base, south of San Francisco. Neighborhoods, museums, and Griffith Park are the visit, not one downtown. Joshua Tree National Park, covered above, pairs with this city.

  • Best time to visit: March to May and September to November. Winter still works for museums and the observatory. Summer is hot inland and crowded at the beaches.
  • Best for: Couples and families who can pick a neighborhood and stay there. A dog can use Griffith Park’s dog park from sunrise to sunset. It closes Tuesday from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM for maintenance. Animals are not allowed inside Griffith Observatory, except service animals.
  • Practical tip: The observatory lot fills on clear evenings. Go earlier in the day if the view is the point.

San Diego

San Diego is the milder city and an easy add from Los Angeles. Balboa Park and the bay are the key stops. It is a second base, not a day trip from the north.

  • Best time to visit: March to May and September to November. Winter is mild enough for the park. Summer is the beach season, and also the busiest.
  • Best for: Families and couples who want a city and a bay, including travelers with a dog. Dogs must be leashed in Balboa Park, except at Nate’s Point and Morley Field. Dog Beach, at the foot of Voltaire Street in Ocean Beach, is the off-leash beach. Most other city beaches ban dogs.
  • Practical tip: Park once at Balboa and walk.

How to plan a trip to California

Plan the roads before the lodging.

  • Check the mountain and coast roads first. Tioga and Glacier Point roads close in snow. Highway 1 can close. Winter Yosemite is valley only.
  • Book the ferry, not the park gate. Alcatraz City Cruises is the only boat. No day-use reservation in 2026. Valley parking fills.
  • Match the day to the heat or the snow. Joshua Tree summer highs reach 100°F.
  • Hold the car for the park days. No shuttle to Yosemite or Joshua Tree.
  • Use mobile data for the morning check. A USA eSIM covers maps and alerts.

It’s monthly and covers 160+ destinations, and you can cancel anytime. There is no contract, and you’re not paying a home-carrier roaming fee for each trip.

A local US number, which is perfect for bank or app verification texts, is an Unlimited Plan feature only.

Always On is the backup. It is 1 GB of free data every month, included with Plans, and it starts when the main plan ends. You still have data for a map or a message.
