Sziget Festival 2026: What is it and how to attend
Find out every detail about the 2026 Sziget Festival and prepare for an adventure on the Island of Freedom.
Did you know the name “Sziget Festival” comes from the Hungarian word for island? That’s where the festival’s slogan — the Island of Freedom — comes from.
Sziget Festival, one of Europe’s most popular music festivals, is preparing for the 2026 edition, and we’ve created a guide with everything you need to know about it.
From who will perform at the festival to where you can stay while attending the Sziget Fest, our guide will cover the basics and include some additional tips.
What is the Sziget Festival?
The Sziget Festival started in 1993 and rapidly became one of Europe’s most important rock festivals. Nowadays, even though it remains a rock festival, it still welcomes other genres, supporting their peace, love, and unity motto.
When starting, the festival underwent some changes, like being called Eurowoodstock, with performers of the original Woodstock performing during the three-day festival.
During its few years, the festival rapidly went from receiving 250,000 visitors to over 360,000, making it one of the most popular festivals in Europe.
For many, Sziget Festival is Europe’s answer to the Burning Man Festival thanks to its unique features, such as the amusement park on the island, the different music and art programs, and other NGO initiatives taking place during Sziget.

People can easily move from the capital’s heart to Óbuda by car, railway, or even on foot if you’re close to it. The easiest way is the HÉV H5 suburban railway, which leaves from Batthyány tér or Margit híd every 15–20 minutes — get off at the Filatorigát station, a short walk from the festival entrance.
The exact address for this festival in Budapest is Május 9. park, Budapest, Hungary, 1033.

Tips for attending the Sziget Festival
Think you have everything ready for the Sziget Music Festival? Let’s take a look at some tips to see if anything is missing on your travel checklist:
- Pay for your tickets in installments: Tickets for Sziget Budapest can be expensive. But if you need extra time to buy them, you can pay in up to three installments.
- Sziget is a cashless festival: You can only pay for food, drinks, and merchandise using a contactless card or a payment-enabled device like your phone or smartwatch — cash isn’t accepted on-site. You can also top up your festival wristband for tap-to-pay convenience.
- Stay connected: Whether traveling only for the festival or planning to stay in Hungary longer, using an eSIM for Hungary will help you save money while enjoying the festival.
- Prepare your budget in advance: Are you planning to pay in installments or once you arrive? Consider how much money you’ll need for your expenses, including water, food, and lodging, and add these to your budget to avoid surprises. Also, Hungary uses the Hungarian Forint (HUF) as its main currency, so consider the currency exchange rate.
- Use the official app: The Sziget App provides updates about the festival and information about performance times. You can also add programs to your favorite list.
- Explore Budapest beyond the island: If you’re arriving early or staying after the festival ends, check out our guide to things to do in Budapest to make the most of your trip.
