When to visit London during Christmas

London’s festive period runs from mid-November to early January, when thousands of lights brighten the streets, and Christmas markets come to life.

Keep in mind that this is a peak travel time, with the holiday season and London’s grand New Year’s event. If you are planning a trip during these dates, we recommend organising and booking everything well in advance.

The London Christmas lights switch-on usually takes place in early or mid-November, marking the official start of the season. Dates vary by year and by street, but this early start gives you plenty of time to enjoy them.

When are London’s Christmas lights switched on?

Regent Street’s iconic angel lights switch on every November.

The exact date for the London Christmas lights switch-on changes every year, but it usually takes place in early or mid-November and runs through New Year’s Day.

Here are the streets and neighbourhoods with the most famous holiday illuminations:

  • Oxford Street: This is usually one of the first streets to switch on its lights during a live music event. The theme of the decorations changes every year, so it is always a surprise.
  • Regent Street: Known for its elegance, this street has architecture that integrates lighting naturally. The decorations hang between buildings, creating a sophisticated display.
  • Carnaby Street: This historic district in London’s Soho showcases artistic holiday lights that change every year. The lights are usually thematic, using geometric shapes, vibrant colours, and avant-garde patterns.
  • Covent Garden: One of the most magical spots in the city. A large Christmas tree and lights decorate the market and piazza alongside giant mistletoe. You can also experience what a white Christmas would look like in London with Covent Garden’s daily snow flurries. From 4th to 31st December, you can expect snow on the hour, every hour, from midday until 9:00 PM, and the lights switch on from 12 November.

What to see in London during Christmas

Key London Christmas highlights include immersive experiences, outdoor ice rinks, and festive attractions. Let’s look at some of the most popular options:

Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park

Winter Wonderland is a massive Christmas festival held every year in Hyde Park and also hosts one of the largest Christmas markets in the city. This year, it will remain open from 19 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, and will be closed on 25 December. Most days open 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM, though some open at 11:00 AM or midday, and 1 December opens at 2:00 PM. Entry slots run hourly from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM, with last entry at 9:30 PM.

Here you can enjoy an ice rink and the world’s largest transportable observation wheel at 70 metres, along with carousels and other fairground rides. The festival also features a wide selection of dining spots and themed bars, including a rotating bar.

Ticket information: You must book your tickets in advance on the official Hyde Park Winter Wonderland website. The price depends on the entry date and time, and you can save up to 25% by booking in advance. Ticket prices range from around £1 for standard tickets (off-peak times) to £8.25 during peak hours.

Somerset House ice rink

Somerset House, a historic building on the north bank of the River Thames, hosts one of London’s most elegant ice rinks in its 18th-century neoclassical courtyard. The rink runs daily from 11th November 2026 to 10th January 2027, closed only on 25 December.

Skating sessions feature music, LED lighting, and a Christmas tree. The building provides the backdrop, while surrounding stalls sell hot chocolate and snacks to round out the experience.

Ticket information: You must book your ticket in advance on the official Somerset House website. Admission tickets cost between £13-28.50 for adults and between £11-15 for children, plus a £1.50 booking fee per ticket, depending on what dates you book. Weekends in December tend to be pricier.

Hogwarts in the Snow

Warner Bros. Studio Tour London presents an experience that recreates original Harry Potter sets dressed in artificial snow. This special tour runs only during the holiday season, from 14th November 2026 to 17th January 2027, featuring exclusive, seasonal elements not displayed during tours at other times of the year.

For example, visitors can explore the Great Hall decorated for a Hogwarts Christmas feast, the Forbidden Forest dusted with snow, and the full-scale model of the castle covered in snow.

Ticket information: Tickets are available online via the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London website. Prices start at £58.50 for standard tickets, rising to £61.00 in January 2027, and the Deluxe Tour starts at £250.

Liberty London holiday decorations

The holiday displays at Liberty London, one of the city’s oldest department stores, are a true London Christmas icon.

Each year, the store adopts a specific theme reflected across every floor of its Tudor-revival building. Inside, you will see a multi-story Christmas tree, themed floral arrangements, and exclusive seasonal items. The Liberty Christmas Shop is also now open and features exclusive Christmas gifts and baubles.

The Southbank Centre Winter Market is among the most charming Christmas markets in London, featuring wooden chalets decorated with lights and garlands. The market stall selections include handmade products, holiday decorations, souvenirs, and Christmas gifts.

Beyond shopping, the market is a destination for food. You can try sausages, crêpes, and mulled wine, alongside British seasonal treats such as mince pies (pastries filled with dried fruit, spices, and occasionally spirits) and roasted chestnuts.

You might also get to experience a concert and/or live performances that take place here regularly, as the market is part of the broader Southbank Centre Winter Festival.

Trafalgar Square is an essential stop in London during Christmas, hosting both a small market and the city’s most symbolic Christmas tree. The tree is an annual gift from the city of Oslo to the people of Britain as a token of gratitude for support during World War II.

Here is how you can organise a weekend/2-day stay to minimise travel time across the city:

  • Afternoon at London Bridge City: Follow the pedestrian path along the Thames toward Tower Bridge to explore Winter by the River. You will find stalls selling handmade jewellery, ceramics, leather crafts, and mulled wine right by the water.
  • Evening skating at Somerset House: Cross north over the river to Somerset House. Spend your evening skating in the 18th-century courtyard, set to music with a towering Christmas tree as the backdrop.

Day 2: West End displays, historic squares, and Winter Wonderland

  • Morning shopping at Oxford Street: Walk along Oxford Street and Regent Street to see the holiday window displays, then stop by the toy displays at Hamleys and the Tudor-revival building at Liberty London.
  • Afternoon in Covent Garden and Leicester Square: Stroll through Covent Garden to see the giant tree, then continue to the Leicester Square Christmas market to browse festive stalls and artisan gifts.
  • Evening at Trafalgar Square and Hyde Park: Visit Trafalgar Square to see the historic Oslo spruce and listen to carolers, then take the Tube west to spend the rest of the night exploring the rides and holiday stalls at Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park.

Things to do in London at Christmas

Beyond the main sights and markets, Christmas offers several other seasonal activities. Here are some of the best things to do in London to get in the holiday spirit:

  • Watch The Nutcracker: This classical ballet is performed at the Royal Opera House and the London Coliseum, with family adaptations also staged across smaller neighbourhood theaters.
  • Enjoy festive afternoon tea: Historic hotels like The Ritz, Claridge’s, and The Savoy serve dedicated holiday afternoon tea menus, complete with pastries, finger sandwiches, and themed tea selections.
  • Visit Santa at Hamleys: The famous toy store on Regent Street runs an immersive experience for children each year, featuring a meet-and-greet with Santa, elf workshops, and a gift. It runs from mid-November to Christmas Eve and requires online booking via the Hamleys website.
  • Sample seasonal sweets: Every market offers seasonal staples like mince pies, gingerbread, sticky toffee pudding (a moist sponge cake drenched in caramel sauce), and traditional Christmas cakes packed with dried fruit and warming spices.

Practical travel tips for London during Christmas

  • Book accommodation early: Central areas like Covent Garden, Soho, or South Kensington place you within walking distance of major sights, though prices run higher. For more budget-conscious stays, consider neighbourhoods such as Shoreditch or Notting Hill and hotels such as easyHotel, Premier Inn, or Travel Lodge. London sees strong holiday demand, so booking three to four months in advance helps secure suitable rates and availability.
  • Take advantage of tourist passes: Options like the London Pass and London Explorer Pass offer discounted or bundled entry to many of the city’s major attractions.
  • Use London’s public transport: The London Underground, local buses, and rail lines provide efficient connections across central districts and outer boroughs. Tap in using an Oyster card or a contactless credit/debit card to avoid buying paper tickets.
  • Understand local payment options: The official currency is the British pound (GBP). Contactless credit and debit cards are the standard way to pay, as cash is rarely needed. Using a card with no foreign transaction fees helps avoid currency conversion fees at public transit, dining, retail, and major venues.
  • Connect your trip with other European cities: London makes a practical starting point for multi-city European itineraries. Rail connections are quick: the Eurostar links London to Paris in just over two hours, with direct routes also serving Brussels and Amsterdam.
