Best Christmas markets and winter activities in Edinburgh

The Traditional Christmas Market at East Princes Street Gardens is the city’s main market and our personal recommendation, especially if you only have room for one stop.
It has the best market stalls and shopping experience, and you can also explore Edinburgh’s famous attractions and landmarks simultaneously.
However, if you’re traveling with kids, you might have to spend more time at West Princes Street Gardens, which includes fun activities like Santa’s Stories for the little ones. For winter activities and ice-skating, you can’t miss George Street’s iconic ice-skating rink.
Traditional markets in East Princes Street Gardens: Best for first-time visitors
This traditional Christmas market is located in one of the city’s most beautiful locations. It’s right beneath the Scott Monument, with views towards the Old Town and Edinburgh Castle. If this is your first time visiting, you’re basically hitting three birds with one stone!
This market has around 70 stalls that sell jewelry, homeware, gifts, Christmas souvenirs, and seasonal Scottish food. You’ll also see the 46-meter LNER Big Wheel and the 80-meter Starflyer, which are paid attractions. Entry to the Christmas Market itself is free.
If you’re looking for a classic Christmas market where you can browse gifts, stop for something warm to eat, enjoy the warm glow of the festive lights, and experience the atmosphere without committing to a ticketed event, East Princes Street Gardens is the way to go.
Do be wary of its popularity, though. This is one of Scotland’s most famous Christmas markets, and due to its central location, it might get a bit crowded.
To avoid the rush, visit on a weekday before evening, especially if you’re with young children.

The funfair includes rides, food and drink stalls, the famous Santa’s Stories, and performances around the Ross Bandstand.
Getting everything done in one visit might be too overwhelming, so we recommend choosing one or two activities beforehand rather than paying for several rides on the spot. You can also enjoy the surrounding atmosphere without buying tickets!

Edinburgh Christmas Market vs Hogmanay: What’s on when?

Edinburgh’s Hogmanay program includes a four-day New Year celebration. Currently, the 31 December 2026 Hogmanay in the Gardens event has tickets listed from £79 pp for standard admission. This is completely separate from the free Christmas market.
| Event | What and when | Tickets |
|---|---|---|
| Edinburgh Christmas Markets | Traditional markets from 14 Nov 2026 to 3 Jan 2027 | Free entry with paid attractions |
| Winter festival events | Winter activities from 14 Nov 2026 to 3 Jan 2027 | Free entry with paid attractions |
| Edinburgh’s Hogmanay | New Year concerts, street celebrations, and fireworks from 29 Dec 2026 to 1 Jan 2027 | Ticketed event (£79 for standard admission) |
If your priority is an Edinburgh Christmas shopping experience, we’d suggest visiting before 24 December when the festive season is in full swing.
Note: If you’re visiting for New Year’s, be sure to plan your trip around Hogmanay road closures, crowds, and ticket requirements.
Suggested route: A map and walking itinerary of Edinburgh Christmas Markets
The three main Winter Festival locations are close enough to combine into a walking itinerary. Here’s our version of a one-day Edinburgh Christmas walking itinerary:
- 11:00 AM: Start at East Princes Street Gardens. If you’re arriving from Edinburgh Waverley, you can browse the main market before the busiest part of the day. Pick up a hot drink and look at all the gift stalls.
- 12:30 AM: Explore West Princes Street Gardens. Head west for the family attractions, or go for a walk through the gardens if you’re not interested in rides.
- 2:00 PM: Lunch and a cafe break. Find a cafe or restaurant around Princes Street, Rose Street, or the New Town for a much-needed break from the cold. Some popular local recommendations are The Ginger Coo Cafe, The Cobbled Roastery, Hotel Chocolat Edinburgh, and Holy Cow.
- 3:30 PM: Head to George Street. Explore the seasonal installations or attend a pre-booked ice skating session!
- 5:00 PM: Return for the evening lights. End your day by revisiting the main market after dark for a different view of the illuminated stalls and rides.

What to eat and drink at Edinburgh Christmas markets

Food is one of the best reasons to spend time at East Princes Street Gardens, especially if you want to warm up before shopping.
You’ll find lots of universal Christmas market favorites like mulled wine, hot chocolate, roasted chestnuts, and chimney cakes, but we do have a couple of authentic Scottish recommendations.
Judging by last year’s announcement, you can look out for Edinburgh- and Scotland-based businesses such as Pies by Jarvis Pickle, Uplands Roast, Edinburgh Honey Co, and Great Glen Distillery, as well as international food stalls.
| Food and drink | What it is | Expected price |
|---|---|---|
| Haggis or veggie haggis | Scottish savoury dish with oats, spices, and other traditional ingredients | £7-11 |
| Scottish tablet | Rich and crumbly sweets made with sugar, butter, and milk | £3-6 |
| Scottish shortbread | Buttery biscuits | £4-10 per pack |
| Hot chocolate | Warm chocolate drink with cream or marshmallows | £4-7 |
| Mulled wine or cider | Warm, spiced seasonal drink | £5-8 |
| Scottish pies | Savoury pastry filled with meat, vegetables, and other ingredients (Pies by Jarvis Pickle) | £6-10 |
| Scottish cheeses | Regional cheeses sold as gifts or in food selections | £5-12 |
Will you need to carry cash to purchase food and drink in Edinburgh Christmas markets?
According to the festival organiser, all event sites are cashless, so the best way to pay is through a contactless card or mobile payment method.
Will reusable mugs be a thing this year?
Last year, the markets used a deposit scheme in which visitors paid an additional amount for a reusable cup. Recover it upon return or keep the cup as a souvenir!
While you can expect similar rules for this year, be sure to check official guidance closer to the event dates. This doesn’t apply to alcoholic drinks bought from festival bars, which must be consumed on-site.
What to buy at the Edinburgh Christmas markets
You’ll find lots of Christmas gifts and souvenirs in Edinburgh’s traditional markets. In 2025, the market had around 71 Scottish stalls, including 53 from Edinburgh and other international sellers.
Here’s how we’d approach Christmas shopping at the Edinburgh Christmas markets.
| Gift | What to look for | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Handmade jewellery | Scottish silversmiths for original designs (Royal Mile Silver) | East Princes Street Gardens |
| Wool and textiles | Fair Isle patterns, Scottish labels | Main market and independent New Town shops |
| Food gifts | Tablets, shortbread, honey, and preserves (Edinburgh Honey Co.) | Main market |
| Christmas decorations | Handmade ornaments, woodwork, and glass decorations | Main market |
| Ceramics and homeware | Locally designed pottery | Main market |
| Budget souvenirs | Small ornaments, postcards, and magnets | Main market and other city souvenir shops |
Tips on buying Edinburgh Christmas market gifts:
- For something authentically local, ask sellers where an item was made. Handmade items should have named makers, information about the materials, or a story behind the design.
- Looking for easy souvenirs and gifts to take back home? Sealed shortbread, packaged sweets, and small ornaments are easy to pack.
- Check your destination’s customs rules before purchasing meat or daily products, plants, or alcohol to take home.
How much does the Edinburgh Christmas Market cost?
You can visit the main market without paying an admission fee, but food, shopping, and ticketed activities can add up. If you’re planning to indulge in every experience at least once at the Edinburgh Winter Festival and Christmas markets, you’re probably looking at a £40-50 spend per person.
For budget-friendly visits, we’d focus on the free markets, buy one snack or drink, and skip the paid rides.
Navigate between Christmas markets and stay connected with peace of mind
Edinburgh’s Christmas markets and Winter Festival attractions are close together, but having reliable mobile data can still make the day easier. You might need to check whether a tram is delayed, find an alternative route if an entrance closes, or locate an indoor cafe when the weather turns.
For live transport information, use the official Lothian Buses and Edinburgh Trams websites. For last-minute changes to attractions, check Edinburgh’s Christmas website and official social media accounts.

How we researched this guide: We took information from official sources, including Edinburgh’s Winter Festival, VisitScotland, Forever Edinburgh, and local transport providers, to verify market dates, opening hours and times, locations, and attractions. We also looked at last year’s event, festival programs, trader announcements, and weather data from the Met Office.
Frequently Asked Questions about Edinburgh Christmas markets
The New Town( around Princes Street, George Street, and St Andrew’s Square) is the most convenient area for reaching the main festival sites on foot. Staying near Edinburgh Waverley is also useful if you’re arriving by train. Old Town accommodation around the Royal Mile puts you closer to historic attractions. Prices can rise during December and Hogmanay, so we’d recommend securing accommodation early.
Yes, all event sites are cashless, with card payments required for attractions. Contactless bank cards and mobile payments are the most practical options.
Snow is possible, but a white Christmas isn’t guaranteed. Historical Met Office data for Edinburgh’s Royal Botanic Garden station records average December temperatures of approximately 7°C during the day and 2°C overnight, although actual conditions vary. We’d prioritise waterproof shoes, warm layers, and a wind-resistant coat over planning for snow.
