Planning to travel to Egypt soon? You’ll need internet to explore famous Egyptian wonders, and it’s worth knowing your data roaming options. These include roaming with your home provider or using a travel eSIM.

But is data roaming in Egypt really worth it, and how much does it cost? Follow along to learn all about plans, prices, and how to stay connected with Holafly’s unlimited data travel eSIM for Egypt.

What is roaming?

Roaming is a service most cellular operators offer. It allows you to stay connected to mobile internet in Egypt via partner networks while using your regular phone plan. Most domestic carriers have roaming agreements with other networks, ensuring international calling and data service.

The main advantage of this service is that it allows you to use your cell phone in Egypt just as you would at home. Make calls and send text messages, in addition to accessing mobile internet. Many other travel connectivity services only offer mobile data.

However, the downside of roaming is that it is one of the most expensive cellular phone services. Make sure to always check the cost of roaming while traveling to Egypt, or any other country, to avoid surprise charges on your cellular plan.

Roaming rates in Egypt

As it stands, data roaming prices in Egypt range from $7 to $12 per day, with services that offer a day-pass option. Pay-as-you-go rates are even more expensive, ranging from $2 to $8 per megabyte (MB) used.

Needless to say, prices will differ from one cell service provider to another. And while we can’t possibly highlight every provider in the world, we can take a look at some of the biggest ones.

Vodafone

Vodafone is one of the leading cellular service providers in the UK. If you have a pay-monthly plan with Vodafone, you’ll be charged a fixed daily price for accessing your regular data allowance in Egypt. The price is £6 per day if you started your plan before 11 August 2021 and £7.86 if you started it after that.

For pay-as-you-go plans, the charge is £0.12 for every MB used. This is cheaper than most pay-as-you-go roaming charges, but it can still rack up a bill if you use data-heavy activities such as watching videos or playing online games.

If you’re a frequent traveler, you might want to look into Vodafone’s Xtra Global Roaming plans. These plans have a higher monthly cost but allow you to use data roaming in 83 countries without extra charges. Check out our guide on Vodafone UK roaming plans and prices.

EE

EE is another popular mobile network in the UK, offering both daily and pay-as-you-go options for data roaming in Egypt. If you have a pay-monthly plan with EE, you can buy a day pass for £8 or a week pass for £40. This would give you access to your regular data allowance while in Egypt.

For pay-as-you-go plans, EE simply says to buy a data add-on without specifying data prices for Egypt. The company also offers unlimited plans with free roaming, but they mostly cover Europe and a limited number of other destinations. Our EE international roaming guide also includes information for other destinations.

O2

We’ve got O2 rounding out the trio of UK cell service providers. Just like with the others, you have different options depending on whether you’re on a monthly or pay-as-you-go plan. For monthly plans, you can get O2 Travel Bolt On for £7 a day. Alternatively, you can look into their travel-inclusive plans to get free roaming, though at a higher monthly cost.

As for pay-as-you-go plans, data roaming would set you back £7.20 for every MB used. Needless to say, you’ll want to avoid data roaming with O2 if you don’t want to increase yourcost of staying in Egypt significantly. Look for a daily plan or get an eSIM instead. Plus, you can check out our O2 international roaming guide for information on roaming costs for destinations.

T-Mobile

Moving over across the pond to the United States, T-Mobile is one of the top network providers here. T-Mobile’s Go5G monthly plans include 5 GB of high-speed roaming data as well as unlimited regular data, however, they do cost more per month than regular plans.

As for travel passes, you can get a day pass with 2 GB of high-speed data for $10 USD, a 10-day pass with 5 GB of high-speed data for $35, or a 30-day pass with 15 GB of high-speed data for $50.

Data roaming isn’t available on prepaid T-Mobile plans, so the above only applies if you have a regular monthly plan with the provider. Check out our T-Mobile international roaming blog for information on other destinations.

A&T USA

AT&T international roaming options include two choices: buy an international day pass or use the pay-as-you-go option whenever you’re traveling abroad.

The international day pass is priced at $12 per day and gives access to your existing mobile plan while in Egypt. Pay-as-you-go charges are $2.05/MB, so they’ll exceed the day pass price pretty much as soon as you do anything beyond checking the time on your phone.

Telstra

Telstra is the leading cell service provider in Australia, offering both a day pass and pay-as-you-go roaming options for Egypt.

Telstra international roaming options include a day pass for Zone 2 for $10 that includes 2 GB of data. As you’d expect, it’s much cheaper than the alternative of paying $3 for every MB you use on a pay-as-you-go charge.

Use an eSIM to avoid roaming charges in Egypt

Do the costs of roaming sound like they’re too expensive? Well, that’s because they are. Thankfully, eSIMs offer a cheaper way to stay connected and are just as convenient and easy to use as data roaming.

You can buy, activate, and start using your eSIM within a matter of minutes, as long as you have an eSIM-compatible phone and a steady internet connection.

Holafly’s eSIM for Egypt offers unlimited data, 5G speeds, and 24/7 customer support. With Holafly, you’ll never have to worry about running out of data on your roaming pass, racking up a crazy bill for using the internet abroad, or having to fiddle with physical Egypt SIM cards

What’s more, Holafly always has your back with Always On, a perk included with every Holafly eSIM that provides 1 GB of monthly backup data at no extra cost.

If you’re planning to visit more destinations and want to save some extra money, you can go for the Holafly Plans monthly subscription. You can use this subscription in Egypt and in over 170 global destinations with plans ranging from 10 GB to unlimited data.
