New York City Marathon 2026: Dates, registration, and route

Learn how to watch the New York Marathon 2026 worldwide, including TV channels, course overview, runner tracking, and the best in-person viewing spots.

Published: September 8, 2026

The New York City Marathon 2026 takes place on Sunday, November 1, 2026, bringing runners from around the world to one of the biggest race days in global sport. The event is part of the Abbott World Marathon Majors and is widely regarded as the world’s largest marathon, with 55,000+ participants and more than two million spectators expected along the course.

The 2026 race is especially significant: it marks the 50th anniversary of the five-borough course. For runners, that makes entry more competitive than ever. For travelers, it means marathon weekend will be one of the busiest and most exciting times to visit New York.

This guide covers the essentials: the confirmed New York Marathon 2026 date, how registration works, and what to know about the route.

What is the TCS New York City Marathon?

The TCS New York City Marathon is the New York Road Runners’ flagship event and one of the most prestigious races in the world. It is known for its scale, its international field, and its point-to-point course through Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Manhattan.

The race brings together 55,000+ participants and more than two million spectators, making it the largest marathon in the world, and the event’s 2026 edition will celebrate 50 years since the course first expanded into all five boroughs.

The marathon began in 1970 as loops around Central Park, but the modern version was born in 1976, when the route was redesigned to cross the city’s five boroughs.

The race is also part of the Abbott World Marathon Majors and one of the most beautiful marathons around the world, alongside other leading global marathons. For many runners, finishing the New York City Marathon is both a bucket-list race and a step toward completing the full World Marathon Majors series.

When is the New York City Marathon 2026?

The race is traditionally held on the first Sunday of November, and this year, the event date falls on Sunday, November 1, 2026

Race-day start times are usually staggered across professional wheelchair divisions, handcycle and select athletes with disabilities, professional runners, and multiple runner waves. The race-day schedule is not announced yet, so check back on the official NYRR race pages closer to marathon week for exact details.

For international travelers, consider setting up a USA eSIM before the trip to help with airport transfers, pre-race logistics, and any travel needs. If you haven’t used one before, check how to buy an eSIM for the USA before departure so you can confirm setup and device compatibility in advance.

It’s also worth arriving several days before the race if you’re traveling from abroad. This gives you time to adjust to the time zone, test local transport routes, and avoid last-minute stress before race morning.

Spectators should also plan ahead, as road closures and subway crowding can slow race-day movement.

How to enter the New York City Marathon 2026?

There are several ways to enter the New York City Marathon 2026, but the most important thing to know is that the 2026 general drawing has already closed, and the drawing took place on March 4, 2026.

For runners without guaranteed entry, the main non-guaranteed route is the New York Marathon lottery. NYRR fills these non-guaranteed entries through three applicant pools: NYC-metro area applicants, U.S. national applicants outside the NYC-metro area, and international applicants.

If you are still hoping to run in 2026, check the official NYRR entry page for any remaining routes, such as charity entries, Team for Kids, Team for Climate, or other guaranteed-entry programs that may apply to your situation. Non-U.S. residents may also be able to book a guaranteed-entry marathon package through an official international tour operator.

For runners planning ahead, it is also useful to understand future entry routes now. But keep in mind that availability, eligibility, claim periods, and fees can change each year, so always verify the latest details on NYRR before making travel or training plans.

The New York City Marathon route

The New York City Marathon route is a point-to-point course through all five New York City boroughs. It starts on Staten Island, crosses the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge into Brooklyn, continues through Queens, enters Manhattan, briefly passes through the Bronx, and returns to Manhattan for the finish in Central Park.

The start is at Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island, where runners are assigned start villages, waves, and corrals before heading onto the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. The bridge is one of the most iconic moments of the race: it is dramatic, exposed, and quiet compared with the wall of noise waiting on the other side in Brooklyn.

Brooklyn makes up a large portion of the early and middle course and stretches through neighborhoods such as Bay Ridge, Sunset Park, Park Slope, Williamsburg, and Greenpoint

After Brooklyn, runners cross into Queens and then take on the Queensboro Bridge into Manhattan. This section is famous because the bridge itself is comparatively quiet, but the exit onto First Avenue brings one of the loudest crowd moments of the marathon. From there, the course runs north through Manhattan before crossing briefly into the Bronx.

The final miles bring runners back into Manhattan, down Fifth Avenue, and into Central Park. The finish area near Central Park is one of the most emotional parts of the course, but it is also logistically busy. Runners should know their post-finish plan in advance, especially if they are meeting family or friends after the race.

If you are staying beyond marathon weekend, a broader New York travel guide can help you plan what to see around the city once race-day road closures and crowds ease.

Watching the New York City Marathon

How to watch the New York Marathon depends on what kind of experience you’re after. The course is lined with crowds across the city, and spectators can choose anything from early Brooklyn cheering spots to the high-energy Manhattan sections near Fifth Avenue and Central Park.

Keep your spectating plan simple: decide whether you want to see your runner once or move between multiple points, understand how New York public transport works before race day, and use the official race app or tracking tools when available.

For international visitors, reliable mobile data in New York is especially useful on marathon day. You may need it to track a runner, pull up maps, or coordinate a post-race meeting spot when streets are closed, and Wi-Fi is unreliable. An eSIM for New York City can help you stay connected without depending on expensive roaming while you move around the city.

The 1 GB allowance refreshes automatically every month at no extra cost, giving you backup data for maps, transport updates, and messages when you need it.
