Getting married in Jamaica? Learn about legal requirements, costs, top venues, and essential tips to make your dream wedding stress-free.

Getting married in Jamaica is one of the most accessible destination weddings in the Caribbean. You only need to be on the island for 24 hours before your ceremony; there is no residency requirement, and the legal process is straightforward for foreign nationals.

The key document you need is a Minister’s Marriage Licence, issued by the Jamaican Ministry of Justice.

This guide covers the full legal process, ceremony types, what everything costs, the best venues, and the most common planning questions.

When you’re coordinating wedding logistics from a Caribbean island, having a reliable connection matters. A Holafly eSIM for Jamaica gives you unlimited data from the moment you land, so you can handle vendor calls, paperwork, and navigation without relying on hotel Wi-Fi.

Types of marriages in Jamaica

Jamaica recognizes several types of marriages, each with different legal standing and requirements.

Civil ceremony

A civil ceremony is legally binding in Jamaica and is the most straightforward option for foreign nationals. The ceremony is performed by a licensed Marriage Officer and can take place at an approved location — including beaches, resort grounds, and private properties — provided it is conducted between 6:00 AM and 8:00 PM. You will need two witnesses aged 18 or older with valid identification.

Religious ceremony

Religious ceremonies performed by a registered minister of religion are also legally binding in Jamaica. The same documentation and licensing requirements apply. Roman Catholic and other denominational ceremonies may require additional paperwork from your home parish. As with civil ceremonies, a religious ceremony must take place between 6:00 AM and 8:00 PM.

Symbolic ceremony

Symbolic ceremonies are not legally binding but are a popular option for couples who prefer to handle the legal formalities at home and celebrate in Jamaica. There are no government restrictions on location, timing, or officiant for a symbolic ceremony, giving you complete flexibility.

Legal requirements for getting married in Jamaica

The legal process in Jamaica centres on obtaining a Minister’s Marriage Licence from the Ministry of Justice. Here is everything you need to know.

Required documents

  • Proof of identity: valid passport or driver’s license
  • Proof of citizenship: certified birth certificate that includes your father’s name
  • Marital status proof: if previously married, provide the original final divorce decree or Decree Absolute. If widowed, provide the death certificate of your former spouse.
  • Occupation: both parties’ exact occupations must be recorded on the Form of Declaration (‘calling’ in official terminology)
  • Documents not in English: must be translated by a certified translator, with their certification of authenticity attached

If you were divorced within the last 12 months, a certified copy of a court letter confirming the divorce is final may also be required. Adopted individuals may be asked to provide adoption papers alongside their birth certificate.

The Minister’s Marriage Licence process

Applications are submitted to the Ministry of Justice at 61 Constant Spring Road, Kingston 10. The process involves four steps:

Collect the licence. Walk-in clients who submit by 12:00 noon Monday to Thursday, or by 11:00 AM on Fridays, can expect same-day or next-business-day processing. Applications submitted through a hotel or resort take approximately three weeks.

Obtain and complete the Form of Declaration. This form must be signed by a Declarant — a person who confirms there are no legal barriers to the marriage — in the presence of a Justice of the Peace (JP) in Jamaica. The form requires both parties’ full names, marital status, occupation, and local address in Jamaica.

Pay the stamp duty fee. Take the blank Minister’s Marriage Licence form (Page 2, unmarked) to the Stamp Duty Office at 72 Harbour Street, Kingston. Pay a stamp duty of J$4,000 (approximately $25 USD). Do not write anything on Page 2 before taking it to the Stamp Duty Office.

Submit to the Ministry of Justice. Return the completed Form of Declaration and stamped Page 2 to the Ministry of Justice, along with original or certified copies of your supporting documents. Where originals are presented, a set of photocopies is also required.

Licence validity and timing

The Minister’s Marriage Licence is valid for 90 days from the date of issue. If it expires before the ceremony takes place, you will need to reapply. The Ministry of Justice recommends applying at least two weeks before your wedding date to allow time for any issues to be resolved.

Persons living abroad must be on the island at least 24 hours before the marriage ceremony. There is no residency restriction for those who permanently reside in Jamaica.

Witnesses and the marriage officer

Every ceremony requires at least two witnesses who are 18 or older with valid identification. If you are having an intimate wedding without guests, many resorts and wedding planners can arrange witnesses on your behalf.

The ceremony must be performed by a licensed Marriage Officer, who can be a registered minister of religion or a civil Marriage Officer authorized by the Jamaican government. You cannot have a friend or family member officiate unless they are legally recognized as a Marriage Officer in Jamaica.

Getting married in Jamaica as a foreigner

  • Foreign nationals can legally marry in Jamaica regardless of nationality. The process is the same whether you are a US citizen, a UK citizen, a Canadian, or from anywhere else — the Minister’s Marriage Licence requirements apply to all couples. Your marriage occupation (‘calling’) must be documented, your birth certificate must include your father’s name, and all documents not in English must be professionally translated.
  • Is a Jamaica marriage legal in the US? Yes. A marriage legally performed in Jamaica is recognized in the United States. You do not need to register the marriage with any federal authority when you return home. Your Jamaican marriage certificate serves as proof of marriage for Social Security updates, name changes, and other administrative processes. Some states may request an apostille stamp from the Jamaican Ministry of Foreign Affairs — it is worth checking your state’s specific requirements.
  • Is a Jamaica marriage legal in the UK? Yes. Marriages legally performed in Jamaica are also recognized in the United Kingdom. No separate registration is required upon return. Keep at least two certified copies of your marriage certificate for any documentation you need back home.
  • The marriage certificate: you will receive a signed copy of the licence on your wedding day. For official legal use back home, you must request a certified copy from the Registrar General’s Department — this takes approximately 3 to 4 months to process. Request it as soon as the ceremony is complete to minimize delays.

For couples who want to compare the Jamaica process with another popular Caribbean destination, the guide to getting married in Ireland covers a different legal process where three months’ notice of intention to marry must be given to a registrar before the ceremony can take place.

Where to get married in Jamaica

Jamaica has a wide range of settings for every style of wedding. Whether you are planning a barefoot beach ceremony or a luxury resort celebration, there is no shortage of options. For a broader look at the island before you commit to a location, the what to pack for Jamaica guide covers what to expect on the ground.

Montego Bay

Montego Bay is the most practical choice for destination weddings with guests flying in from abroad. It is home to the main international airport, has the strongest vendor and coordination infrastructure on the island, and offers a wide range of resort options at different price points.

Resorts like Half Moon and Sandals have dedicated wedding coordinators and can handle the Ministry of Justice paperwork on your behalf, though hotel-submitted applications take three weeks to process.

Negril

Negril is the classic Jamaican beach wedding destination — Seven Mile Beach is one of the most photographed stretches of sand in the Caribbean. It suits couples who want a more relaxed, less commercial feel than Montego Bay. The sunsets in Negril are exceptional for ceremony timing and photography.

Ocho Rios

Ocho Rios sits between Montego Bay and Kingston and is a strong option for couples wanting something different from the typical resort strip. Laughing Waters Villa offers a private beach, two lawns, and a distinctive setting away from the larger all-inclusive properties. Ocho Rios works well for smaller, more intimate weddings.

Port Antonio

Port Antonio is the most off-the-beaten-path of the main wedding destinations. Trident Castle offers a genuinely dramatic setting, though it comes with logistical challenges, including distance from the main airport and higher rainfall than the West Coast. Best suited for couples who specifically want a unique, remote venue and are prepared for more complex coordination.

How much does it cost to get married in Jamaica?

Wedding costs in Jamaica vary widely depending on the venue, guest count, and level of service. The table below covers the main expenses.

ItemEstimated Cost (USD)
Stamp duty (Minister’s Marriage Licence)~$25
Marriage licence and administrative fees~$95 to $100
Resort wedding package (all-inclusive)$2,500 to $15,000+
Private villa or independent venue$1,500 to $10,000+
Wedding planner$1,000 to $3,000+
Photographer/videographer$1,500 to $5,000+
Overall budget range (most couples)$5,000 to $30,000 USD

Budget tip: Many all-inclusive resorts offer complimentary or heavily discounted wedding packages with a minimum room-night commitment. If most of your guests are staying at the resort, this can significantly reduce the headline cost. Resorts like Hyatt Ziva are often cited as a strong balance of quality and value for groups.

Hidden costs to plan for include vendor fees for outside suppliers brought into resort properties, transportation for guests between venues, and surcharges for ceremonies in more remote locations. Budget an additional 15 to 20 percent above your initial estimates to cover these.

How to plan your Jamaica wedding

  • Start the licence process at least two weeks before the ceremony. The Ministry of Justice recommends applying a minimum of two weeks out. If your application is submitted through a hotel or resort, allow three weeks. Build this into your timeline before you book anything else.
  • Get your documents in order before you travel. Gather certified birth certificates (with your father’s name), have any non-English documents translated, and confirm your divorce decree or death certificate is available if applicable. Arriving with incomplete paperwork delays the entire process.
  • Confirm your occupations are documented. Both parties’ exact occupations must appear on the Form of Declaration. This is a formal legal requirement that is easy to overlook — make sure your wedding planner or resort coordinator is aware of it.
  • Check the 6am to 8pm ceremony window. All legally binding ceremonies in Jamaica must take place between 6:00 AM and 8:00 PM. If you are planning an evening ceremony, schedule it with enough time before the 8pm cutoff.
  • Hire a local wedding planner or use your resort coordinator. The paperwork process — particularly the Form of Declaration, the JP requirement, and the Stamp Duty Office visit — is easier to navigate with someone who handles it regularly. A local planner can also manage vendor relationships, permits, and logistics that are difficult to coordinate remotely.
  • Request your certified marriage certificate early. The Registrar General’s Department takes 3 to 4 months to issue a certified copy of your marriage certificate. Submit the request as soon as the ceremony is complete so the certificate is ready when you need it for name changes or other documentation at home.
  • Keep mobile internet access throughout. From confirming final vendor details to translating documents on the go, you will need a reliable data connection throughout the planning and wedding days. Mobile internet in Jamaica covers your options for staying connected on the island.
