Timing your pre-dawn morning around Dawn Patrol and the mass ascension

The morning sessions, known as Dawn Patrol and Mass Ascension, are the flying events.

Plus, being in the New Mexico desert, October mornings can be very chilly before sunrise, so adjust your USA packing list accordingly. During the evening sessions, the balloons stay anchored but inflated. As the sun sets, the launch field turns into a light show, with all the balloons lit like giant holiday ornaments. The evening session then concludes with a synchronized drone light show and a massive fireworks display.
Getting to Balloon Fiesta Park and dodging the parking crush
When planning your road trip to Albuquerque, there are two main ways in:
- Driving in and parking on-site.

Two on-site parking lots are available: one at the north end of the park and the other at the south end.

The Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta 2026 runs from October 3-11. However, each day doesn’t follow the same itinerary, and some standout dates may be worth planning your trip around.
October 5 is New Mexico Day, when all New Mexico residents receive free general admission. As a result, the day has a very local, celebratory atmosphere. After the balloon launch, pilots compete in a flying competition, showcasing their skills in various challenges.
Then October 10 is Music Fiesta, which is one of the busiest days of the event. Starting at 4 pm, a live music festival takes place inside the park as the balloons take off, creating an all-in-one music and balloon show.
