Christmas markets in York 2026: Dates and opening hours

Best Christmas markets in York

York has one main Christmas market, so there is no choosing between sites the way there is in Manchester or Edinburgh. The St Nicholas Fair is it, and it is comfortably one of the best Christmas markets in Europe.

What changes is which part of it you spend your time in. The Parliament Street chalets are the busiest and the best introduction. St Sampson’s Square holds most of the alpine chalets and the craft stalls. The food is concentrated in the Shambles Market food court, a short walk away, which is also where you will find seating.

If you only have a couple of hours, start at St Sampson’s Square for gifts, then walk through to Shambles Market to eat.

York Christmas Market (St Nicholas Fair): Best for a classic first visit

For first-time travelers visiting Yorkshire, the York Christmas Market is the best place to start, with free entry, lots of chalets to explore, and that Christmas feeling following every step you take.

This market spans the Parliament Street area, looping through Goodramgate, King’s Square, and Colliergate, as well as St Sampson’s Square, where most alpine chalets are located. With over 80% of local traders, there are lots of local crafts, artisan products, and unique Christmas gifts to check out at the St Nicholas Fair.

Travelers can visit the market at different times, as you can stay a little longer to grab dinner and some drinks, or simply enjoy a night walk across the city walls.

Keep in mind that weekends are the problem, particularly from late afternoon onwards, and especially over the last two weekends before Christmas. A weekday morning is the most relaxed time to go, and because the market closes on Tuesdays, Wednesday mornings are busier than they used to be.

Note: 2026 is the first year the York Christmas Market closes on Tuesdays. City of York Council approved a six-day market in May 2026, making Tuesday a weekly rest day, and Blue Badge holders regain vehicle access through Goodramgate and King’s Square on those days. It is running as a trial, with a review due in early 2027.

How to get to the York Christmas market: Trains, parking, and coaches

The train is the easiest way in. York Railway Station is a 15 to 20 minute walk from Parliament Street, straight through the centre.

  • From Leeds: Around 25 minutes
  • From Manchester: Around an hour and 30 minutes
  • From London King’s Cross: Around 2 hours by direct LNER service
  • From Edinburgh: Around 2 hours and 30 minutes

Driving is harder, as the market sits in the pedestrianised centre. Park and ride is the better option: York has six sites, parking is free, and electric buses run into town from around 5:30 AM until roughly 10:30 PM.

  • Askham Bar
  • Designer Outlet
  • Grimston Bar
  • Monks Cross
  • Poppleton Bar
  • Rawcliffe Bar

If you would rather park centrally, Q-Park Shambles, Q-Park Station, Union Terrace and Marygate are the closest, though they fill early on market days. Piccadilly Car Park is worth knowing if anyone in your group has limited mobility, as Shopmobility York is on the top floor and parks its customers free.

Coaches cannot stop outside the railway station. Drop-off is limited to:

  • The coach parks at St George’s Field and Union Terrace
  • Three rendezvous points: Leeman Road, Fawcett Street and Foss Bank

Christmas market coach arrangements are published each October. Groups travelling with young children or passengers with additional needs need a council permit, applied for at least seven days ahead.

Note: Travelling in from outside the UK? Check whether roaming in the UK is included in your plan before you rely on live train times on the way in.

What to buy at the York Christmas Market

Travelers visiting the York Christmas Market will find lots of products worth buying, but here are some of the best items to consider:

  • Yorkshire artisan goods: Handmade soaps, natural cosmetics, candles, and wood items made by locals are some of the best items to get at the Christmas market.
  • Regional food products: Local cheese, special advent calendars, and alcoholic drinks are perfect to buy and take back home, but look for vacuum-packed options.
  • York-themed Christmas decorations: Great to take back home and add a different touch to traditional local decorations.
  • Wool items: Mostly from Black Yak, these are handmade, hand-knitted, high-quality items, including winter and summer clothing and home accessories.
  • Local arts and prints: Perfect souvenirs from York, featuring traditional local scenes from independent designers.

These are all items worth taking home, but whenever there’s any doubt, it’s best to ask a vendor whether there are any agricultural or customs restrictions. This also applies when wondering whether an item is locally made, as there are still vendors from outside at this Christmas market.
