Best time to visit Southeast Asia: A country-by-country guide

Mainland Southeast Asia is generally driest from November to February, while Indonesia and Malaysia’s east coast are best at different times. Plan your trip with this guide.

Published: September 22, 2026

The best time to visit much of mainland Southeast Asia is November to February, when conditions are generally cooler and drier. However, the ideal months vary considerably between Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar.

But the region does not follow one weather pattern. Indonesia, for example, generally has its dry season from April to October, while Malaysia’s east and west coasts experience different monsoon patterns.

That means there is almost always a part of Southeast Asia with favourable weather. To stay connected throughout your trip, consider an eSIM for Southeast Asia from Holafly for unlimited data and seamless coverage. This guide breaks down when to visit each part of the region, month by month.

Best time to visit mainland Southeast Asia

Mainland Southeast Asia covers Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar. While these countries share monsoon influences, their weather patterns are not identical.

Best overall months: November to February.

This period generally brings drier and more comfortable conditions to much of the mainland, making it a popular time for temple visits, sightseeing and outdoor activities.

The drawback: This is peak tourist season in many destinations. Expect larger crowds and higher prices, especially around the December holiday period. Before you pack your bags for the Southeast Asia trip, here is what to expect.

Country-specific timing on the mainland

  • Thailand: The cooler, drier season in much of the country runs from November to February, while hotter conditions arrive from March to May. Rain increases from around May, although southern Thailand has different patterns on its two coasts.
  • Vietnam: Vietnam has three distinct climate zones. Northern Vietnam is generally cooler and drier in winter, central Vietnam has a wetter period from around September to January, and southern Vietnam has a dry season from roughly November to April.
  • Cambodia:The dry season runs roughly from November to April, with the wet or “green” season from May to October.
  • Laos: The cool, dry season is generally  November to April, with the wet season from around May to October.
  • Myanmar: The cool, dry season is generally  November to February. Beach destinations are typically best from November to April.

For a full breakdown of Thai seasons, see our guide to the best time to visit Thailand. For Vietnam specifically, our guide to the best time to visit Vietnam covers each region in detail.

Tip: Vietnam is long enough to span two climates at once. If the north is wet, the south is usually dry. Check the specific region you are visiting rather than the country as a whole.

Best time to visit Indonesia and the islands

Indonesia has a tropical climate with a broad dry season from around April to October in many areas, including Bali and Java. For Bali and Lombok, May to September is a particularly popular window for sunny weather and lower rainfall.

This is when you are more likely to get sunny days and lower humidity, although the weather varies between islands.

The drawback: July and August bring peak international crowds and higher accommodation costs.

Indonesia’s wet season runs from November to March in many parts of the country. Rain can be heavy, but conditions vary by location, and showers do not necessarily last all day.

To ensure you stay connected throughout your trip, an eSIM for Indonesia can be a convenient option. For a deeper look at the best time to visit Bali, look for festival calendars and local weather conditions.

Tip: May and September are the sweet spot for Bali. You  can enjoy dry-season conditions while avoiding some of the July and August crowds and peak pricing.

Best time to visit Malaysia: East coast vs west coast

Malaysia is one of the countries where the coast you choose matters more than a single best month.

The east and west coasts experience different monsoon patterns, so there is often a Malaysian destination with relatively favourable beach conditions depending on when you travel.

West coast: Roughly November to March

This includes Langkawi and Penang. The west coast is generally drier during the northeast monsoon period, although rainfall varies between destinations and months.

East coast: Roughly May to September

This includes the Perhentian Islands and Tioman. The east coast generally has its best beach conditions during the middle of the year, before the northeast monsoon brings wetter and rougher conditions from around November.

Many east coast island resorts close or operate on reduced schedules during the northeast monsoon. Check your accommodation before booking.

Tip: If your dates are fixed, pick your Malaysian coast to match. Travelling in January?  Langkawi is a better bet. Travelling in July? The Perhentian Islands and Tioman are generally in their better-weather period.

Worst time to visit Southeast Asia

There is no single bad month for the whole region. But there are periods worth planning around for specific countries.

March to April: Mainland heat

The period before the rains arrive can be extremely hot across parts of mainland Southeast Asia. Temperatures rise significantly in Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and neighbouring countries, making long days of sightseeing harder work.

May to October: Wetter season across much of the mainland

This is the wetter period across much of mainland Southeast Asia, although Vietnam has particularly significant regional differences. Showers are often heavy and short-lived in some destinations rather than continuous rain.

It is not necessarily a reason to cancel your trip. Landscapes turn bright green, crowds drop significantly, and prices fall. For budget travellers, this is often the best value window of the year.

Typhoon season in the Philippines and Vietnam

The Philippines experiences tropical cyclones throughout the year, but the peak of typhoon season is July to October, according to PAGASA, the country’s weather agency.

Vietnam can also experience tropical storms and typhoons, with central Vietnam particularly exposed from around September to November. Northern and central areas can see significant rain and storm activity during this period.

If you are travelling during these periods, monitor local weather forecasts and allow flexibility in your itinerary. Travel insurance that covers weather-related disruptions can also be useful.

December holidays: Crowds and pricing

Late December is one of the busiest periods for many popular destinations in Southeast Asia. If you are travelling during the Australian summer holiday period, book accommodation and internal flights well in advance.

Tip: Travelling during the storm or monsoon season can still work with some planning. Build in buffer days, choose flexible fares where possible, and check local weather conditions before travelling to exposed coastal areas.

Best time to visit Southeast Asia for festivals

Southeast Asia has some of the most distinctive festivals in the world. Several are worth planning a trip around.

Tet Nguyen Dan — Vietnam, late January or early February

Vietnamese Lunar New Year, commonly known as Tết, usually falls in late January or February. Expect decorations, family gatherings, traditional food, cultural celebrations, and increased domestic travel.

Keep in mind that Tết is one of Vietnam’s busiest holiday periods, and many businesses operate reduced hours. For example, Tết falls on 6 February 2027.

Nyepi — Bali, March

Nyepi is Bali’s Day of Silence. For around 24 hours, normal activities across the island stop, including travel, businesses, and many forms of entertainment. Internet access is also generally suspended as part of the island-wide observance.

The Melasti and Bhuta Yajna rituals take place around the period leading up to Nyepi. It is one of Bali’s most distinctive cultural experiences.

Songkran — Thailand, April 13-15

The Thai New Year, best known for nationwide water fights. Water guns, buckets, and even elephants with water cannons get involved. It symbolises washing away the past year’s misfortunes.

If you’re planning to join the festivities, make sure to stay connected with an eSIM for Thailand.

Pahiyas — Philippines, 15 May

Pahiyas is a colourful harvest festival held in Lucban, Quezon, on 15 May. Locals decorate houses with fruit, vegetables, rice, colourful decorations, and the distinctive rice wafers known as kiping, accompanied by traditional Filipino music and dance.

Hungry Ghost Festival — regional, August or September

The Hungry Ghost Festival is observed in various parts of Southeast Asia during the seventh lunar month, particularly in communities with Chinese cultural traditions.

Practices vary by country and community, but commonly include offerings, incense, performances, and ceremonies intended to honour ancestors and wandering spirits.

Thadingyut — Myanmar, September or October

Thadingyut, also known as the Festival of Lights, marks the end of Buddhist Lent.

The three-day celebration takes place around the full moon of the Myanmar lunar month of Thadingyut, usually in September or October. Homes, streets, and religious sites are illuminated with lights and candles.

Which country to visit in Southeast Asia

If your dates are flexible, pick the country first. If your dates are fixed, pick the country that suits the season.

  • First-time visitors: Thailand. It has a well-established tourism industry, extensive transport options, and a wide range of destinations.
  • Beaches: Indonesia or Malaysia, depending on the month. The Philippines is also excellent for island hopping when weather conditions are favourable.
  • History and temples: Cambodia for Angkor, Myanmar for Bagan.
  • Quieter travel: Laos offers a slower pace and generally sees fewer international visitors than Thailand or Vietnam.
  • Food: Vietnam and Thailand are the two standout choices, although food lovers will find excellent cuisine throughout the region.

Is Thailand or Vietnam cheaper?

Vietnam is generally cheaper than Thailand for accommodation, food, and transport, although costs vary considerably depending on the destination and travel style. Both can be affordable choices for Australian travellers.

Laos and Cambodia are also generally on the cheaper end of the region, while Singapore and Brunei tend to be more expensive.

What is the prettiest country in Southeast Asia?

It depends on what you are looking for. Vietnam has the most dramatic landscapes, from Ha Long Bay to the northern mountains.

The Philippines is known for its beaches and island scenery, while Laos offers a quieter mix of rivers, mountains, and rural landscapes.
