If you are a Telstra customer in Australia travelling to India, you can keep your existing SIM card without swapping it for a local one, as Telstra roaming is available in India, allowing you to stay connected using your Telstra SIM card.

This guide covers everything you need to know about Telstra roaming in India, including postpaid roaming plans, international roaming packs for prepaid customers, and standard pay-as-you-go roaming rates.

In the end, if you find Telstra roaming restricted and would like to find an alternative, you can consider Holafly eSIM, offering unlimited data, reliable coverage in 200+ destinations, flexible plan durations, and 24/7 customer support.

Can you use Telstra roaming in India?

Yes, Telstra international roaming works in India for eligible postpaid and prepaid customers. India is included in Telstra’s Zone 2 international roaming countries. So, Telstra customers can use their SIM card in this country with one of Telstra’s roaming plans.

Telstra’s coverage is provided via local partner networks in India, primarily Airtel or Vodafone Idea. Your phone usually connects automatically to the strongest available supported network, but coverage can vary by city and region.

Telstra postpaid International Roaming Day Pass for India

Telstra pay-as-you-go rates in India for postpaid users

If you are not eligible to use the $10 day pass, you’ll be charged pay-as-you-go rates, which can get very expensive quickly, especially if you want to frequently use mobile internet in India

PAYG rate only applies to postpaid plans. If you don’t purchase an international roaming pack as a prepaid customer, you won’t be able to use Telstra roaming in India.

  • Data rate: $3 per MB.
  • SMS: S0.75 per message.
  • Voice rates: $3.50 per minute.

Warning: The $3 per MB is a very high rate for frequent data users. Even a 10-minute scroll on data-heavy apps like Instagram or TikTok can consume up to 100 MB, which will cost $300 per day. You can consider purchasing an eSIM or an India SIM card as a more budget-friendly alternative.

Pro tip: To avoid roaming charges in India, disable data roaming on your phone. In this case, if you need internet access, you should use your hotel’s Wi-Fi. This will prevent you from incurring any charges.
