In a world dominated by screens, notifications and artificial light, more travellers are planning holidays around what happens after sunset, seeking destinations where dark skies reveal the Milky Way, meteor showers and thousands of stars rarely visible from cities.

To identify the world’s best places for stargazing, Holafly created its first Clean Sky Index, ranking destinations based on sky darkness, clear-night frequency, accessibility and official Dark Sky certification. Rather than simply highlighting the darkest places on Earth, the index identifies destinations that offer the best overall balance between exceptional night skies and practical travel.

The results reveal that the world’s best stargazing destination is Pic du Midi, France, whose exceptional sky quality, official DarkSky certification and easy accessibility helped it outperform even remote locations such as NamibRand Nature Reserve in Namibia and Chile’s Atacama Desert. The top five is completed by Warrumbungle National Park (Australia), Grasslands National Park (Canada), NamibRand Nature Reserve (Namibia) and AlUla (Saudi Arabia).

Dark skies are increasingly becoming a reason to travel as light pollution spreads across cities worldwide, travellers are looking for destinations where they can experience the night sky as it was meant to be seen.

While remote deserts remain among the darkest places on Earth, the research shows that accessibility plays a major role in choosing a destination. Places that combine exceptional sky quality with relatively easy access are becoming increasingly attractive for travellers planning a stargazing getaway.

The ranking highlights that the darkest sky doesn’t always make the best destination; while NamibRand Nature Reserve recorded the purest darkness in the study, its long travel time reduced its overall score. By contrast, Pic du Midi topped the ranking by combining outstanding sky quality with a journey of less than four hours from London. Other destinations, including La Palma, Aoraki Mackenzie and Cherry Springs State Park, also demonstrate that world-class stargazing can be much more accessible than many travellers expect.

To identify the world’s best stargazing destinations, Holafly analysed 11 locations using four weighted criteria: light pollution (35%), based on Sky Quality Meter (SQM) readings and the Bortle scale; clear-night frequency (30%), measuring the percentage of cloud-free nights throughout the year; accessibility (20%), based on total travel time from a major international hub; and official Dark Sky certification (15%), recognising destinations designated by DarkSky International. To ensure geographical diversity, no more than three destinations from the same country were included in the final shortlist, while both certified and non-certified locations were assessed to prioritise real sky quality over certification alone.
